Yeah - I was quite particular about what I wanted to start with and couldn't find anything quite right here in Perth at the time, so I went east for it.

Hows the car going? Did you get that better motor? Have you been down the 1/4 mile?
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Oh the motor is a beast, it'll be fine.. it's the motor controller which has been a problem. I recently received my CafeElectric Zilla 2K controller to go in it, but am also upgrading the battery pack over the next couple of months to something with 3x more power! (the current one can only put out about 100kW)

Which means it won't be seen on the road or the race track until maybe autumn '09, but it'll be worth it..

Hi folks,

Sorry for the absenteeism, not much to report really as the car is still in the workshop and work/uni has been getting in the way of me finishing - unfortunately there always seems to be something more urgent to do! I imagine that's a common sentiment among those of us with project cars..

But it's been happening bit by bit. I stripped out a lot of the old components which went into a Nissan Silvia conversion, to make way for the new gear I plan to put in the MX5. And it's getting a pretty major rework to bring it up to date with the latest 2009 NCOP14 standards, which are a big improvement on the old ways of building electric cars (higher standards now for safety etc - definitely a good idea but makes construction a little more onerous).

I've reinforced the motor mounting frame so it'll be able to take all the torque I might want to throw at it, and the motor will probably go back in this weekend. The powerful battery pack plans got a bit daunting so for now I've got another pack of ~100kW ThunderSky lithiums to go in it. It'll still have lots of torque at low speeds, but nothing special above 100km/h due to relatively low battery voltage.

Getting pretty sick of it not being finished now so I'll knuckle down this weekend and try to make some more progress.

PS: Shameless plug for the business I'm now involved with, in case anyone else is thinking of doing an electric vehicle project! Check out http://www.evworks.com.au
