Ok - For you NC' ers - I'm interested to hear what experiences people have had fitting performance headers and what sort of improvements they noticed even running with stock mid pipes and mufflers. OR has anyone just upgraded the muffler and what was the result? (apart from the obvious increase in noise!)

Was going to start my own NC Exhaust Thread since there isn't really one that i can find, only this thread about extractors for the NC that disintegrates into the usual debate about the validity of exhausts and dynos and what not.

Moving right along: i have been doing some research on the various aftermarket options for exhausts for the NC. For the record, the only real benefits i am after are:

1. lighter muffler (the NC's muffler weighs, according to Goodwin Racing, 26 pounds/12kilograms), All of Goodwin's options are lighter.
2. improved throttle response - from driving a few of Chris/MX5 Racing's NC race cars, i know i can expect a small but noticeable improvement in throttle response.

Yes, with breathing and exhaust modifications this opens up a little more hp according to a number of dyno claims ( if you want more, start here, and better still, ECU tuning becomes more worthwhile, however that's neither here nor there, as things like improved throttle response and a nicer tone are things i can feel from the drivers seat immediately.

Noise-wise is the only bug-bear for me as i'm after something that isn't going to be overbearing at 3000rpm on the freeway, but provides a bit more bark on wide open throttle. For all these reasons i expect i will lump for one of Goodwin Racing's options.

Goodwin Racing:
RoadsterSport II Stainless Steel Duals - Goodwin Racing's most popular exhuast, 7 pounds lighter than standard, ~8hp max power gain, 15% - 25% louder than stock depending which baffles you use (there are two types to choose from).




RoadsterSport RACE Muffler - this puppy has two clear advantages - only 7 pounds in weight, and it's very cheap! It's a single system (only one pipe out the back) which for some will be more suited to the MX5, for others will not look as good as twins.



Goodwin can also source:
Racing Beat: same weight as stock, approx 15% louder than stock. Probably a good choice for someone wanting a bit of muffler 'bling' this has a nice chunky look to it.



RoadsterSport "Q" Stainless Steel - the Quiet choice, about 10-15% louder than stock, Brian Goodwin recommends this for those intending on doing headers and midpipe as well.

So, the long and short of it all is that judging the sounds and tone of an exhaust is all very objective, and apart from the few people that bother to record the sound of the exhaust from in their car going along, videos don't always help much either. So looking for NC owners to contribute their own thoughts on their exhaust choices, and what they like or don't like about the sound etc.

Thus making this a more useful thread for other NC owners!

The venerable BlueMeany from the US has done this video highlighting the 3 stages of exhaust available from Goodwin and how they all sound. Trawl through his videos, there's plenty of worthwhile viewing there for NC owners thinking of shopping with Brian Goodwin

Hey Philz, i know they are out there, looking for worthwhile reports or, better still, video of these examples. I for one have always been a big fan of Fujitsubo's exhausts.

It is a complete system which you can also source from Goodwin Racing. The most popular Goodwin Racing setup being the Goodwin Racing headers, mid-pipe and 'Q' muffler.
Some then go with an ECU piggyback and tune (Sniper or XEDE seem to be the only choices available at the moment) however this isn't necessary. But will give you a slightly higher max HP if that's what you're chasing.

Some specs on the 5zigen Proracer twin muffler for the NC:

(so it's heavier than stock!)
