Fuel gauge reading low?

Postby Garry » Thu Sep 10, 2009 1:42 pm

Here's a tip for everyone. I had the same problem with my NA so maybe it's a generic MX5 thing.

Recently my car seemed to be using a lot of fuel according to the fuel gauge. I filled the tank up yesterday and checked the amount of fuel used and the distance travelled and the economy was actually quite good. When looking at the gauge I noticed that the needle only just managed to get to the bottom of the full blob. It used to go almost all the way to the F mark. I removed the instrument cluster hood and cleaned and tightened up all the contacts on the 3 plugs that connect to the back of the gauges and now the needle moves to the top of the full blob, almost touching the F. Problem solved. The same trick worked on my NA a few years ago.

It might be a Mazda thing - our 2002 Astina has been doing that annoying trick for about a year now. I'll have to investigate further.
