What do Swaybar Endlinks do?

Postby matt9111 » Thu Aug 20, 2009 8:09 pm

Hi everyone,

I've just bought some Whiteline Adjustable Swaybars and I was just wondering what Swaybar endlinks do?

If they're good for anything I'll get them too.

Cheers

You already have them standard. They connect the sway bar to the lower control arm. The ones from whiteline let you adjust them. Basically it lets you play with the pre-load on the swaybars which lets you fine-tune the suspension. So inducing more understeer or oversteer depending on whether you adjust the front or rear pair.

The sway bar is attached to the suspension by the end link. You would already have an end link on each end of your front and rear factory sway bars. Do you mean adjustable end link?

Lol, yeah I meant the adjustable ones, and I thought the Adjustable swaybars, allowed you to play around with under/oversteer

so if your sway bars are not adjustable can you use the adjustable end links to acheive a different tune instead?

Actually the adjustable bars themselves control the oversteer/understeer setting of the car.

The adjustable endlinks just allow you to adjust preload on the bar which can marginally affect how the car reacts to the sway bars..
Usually the adj end links are adjusted to ensure that there is no preload on the bars.

Adjusting both of the front or rear end links at the same time wouldn't do anything for steer characteristics. Would just lower or raise the end of the bar relative to the chassis.

Sway bars are designed so the arms are parallel to the ground when the car is static. When you lower the car, you need shorter end links otherwise the sway bar will be preloaded and the ends will be pointing up. It is highly advisable not to preload a sway bar this way as it can induce unwanted handling characteristics.

My car is lowered so will I need these or is it advisable to get these... also how thick can we go before we have to strenghten the swaybar mounts???

You dont have to have them.. ( mine is lowered and doesnt have them..)

Just means the sway bar wont be exactly as the factory designed it..
It would change the rate of the swaybar marginally due to the increased angle the linkages are working in..
and you 'may' end up with some preload on the bar..

Agreed.

What he said is spot on.
Yes, it will preload your bar somewhat, but not too a point of changing the handling of the car, most of you would not even begin to notice it. I didn't when I did mine.

The preload amount is different for everyone depending on how low your car is. if your car is 30mm to 50mm lowered you would not even blink at it.
CT is on the money with his comment's but for the real world application, it is not a must do thing. IMHO. :)

You could usually go upto around the 27mm mark or more before you need to change the mounting hardware, we do a kit that can do this, but is not a must for anything under that size. (talking about front size)'

For the rear usually around the 22mm to 24mm. (which is really heavy bars, even the race cars don't go that big from memory)

What size bars do you run Chris? (CT)

Josh,

what options do you have for mounting hardware?

I've got aftermarket bars (24f/14r) on my track NB8A and while have had no issues so far, (only 2 meetings), am aware that NBs are prone to cracking the std mounts, so was interested in finding out what options there before it does happen..

We can do a heavy duty universal D bush kit, includes fatter D's and also high tensile steel wider brackets, as for the bolts cracking the stud mounts, I really can't do anything about that i'm sorry.

I would really leave it the way it is for now though, the wider brackets really are going to be of no help really, it's the problem of the stud mounts that you need too look into. maybe ask some other the other racers what they have done too fix this issue.
