stick on front number plate
When you get issued with a defect notice in the ACT, the vehicle needs to be inspected within 2 weeks otherwise it is deemed not roadworthy and isn't allowed to be dríven on the roads. Essentially, all I had to do was to remove the sticker, bolt on the normal number plate and get it inspected (costs $53). I then took the passed inspection record to the road registry to get the defect notice removed from my car.

ah sorry, I missed the defect bit.
makes sense now, you need to prove you've fixed it rather that just say "yeah, I fixed it"

stick on front number plate
One of our members drove around with a front stick on number plate for years until he got pulled up coming back from a long weekend in Canberra 3 years ago. He was let off with a warning but told to put his original plate back on. He continued to drive with the stick on plate until he was pulled up again coming back from a long weekend in Dubbo last year. Again he was let off with a warning but was told to put the original plate back on. He figured he wouldn't be lucky 3 times so he has now put the plate back on the front but I must admit the stick on one looked heaps better.

You know what that means? He shouldn't go on long weekend trips!

stick on front number plate
I notice many defective rear number plates in Melb- faded fluro paint and often illegible. Most seem to be dríven by at least middle aged drivers. This is of course not legal and you can be fined. The drivers can simply replace the plate at no charge but instead they are either too lazy or just ignorant of the law. In my street cars also regularly park opposite double white lines- seems some people are not too smart.

Exactly! I see that in Sydney as well. Blown head lights etc etc etc. They don't get defected...

I've been running a stick on front plate in WA for close to 4 years now. I haven't been pulled over in 3 years for it.

stick on front number plate
A couple of weeks ago, one of the big news stories was about how many numberplates get stolen and then these stolen plates are put on other cars to steal petrol from servos and to be used in armed holdups etc.
If they were to allow stick-on plates, then the incidence of this happening would diminish by quite a bit, as they could easily make the stickers impossible to remove properly and they can certainly make them in such a way as to make them not re-useable, like data dots etc.
The stick-on plates could have some sort of security device clearly visible, so you couldn't just print your own.
This would then be a real win-win situation.
Cars could have stick-on plates, and plates couldn't get stolen.
Now why couldn't the RTA think of this?

I think that is one of the main reasons why they don't allow stick-ons. People would print their own, no matter what preventative measure.
Saw a 5 up here, with a normal plate covering up a front stick-on plate. Must have got done by the plod. The plod must be as pedantic everywhere then.

Jimmy wrote:I had one for about a year up until a week ago when I got defected. The copper didn't give me a fine as he agreed that it looked much better but he still issued me with a notice. $53 later (inspection fee) and the slimline plate is back on I'm not complaining though, I was in the wrong and was bound to get caught sooner or later.
The main reason I got it made up was to prevent the number plate bolts hitting the bumper as people walked past it. This happened all the time with my previous Five and I wasn't going to let it happen to this one. As an added bonus, it looked so much better. Now i've got some rubber grommets on the end of the bolts for protection.
Jimmy.
I was also sporting a sticker of my Centenary of Federation plates for the same reason as you. Someone backed into my car (more than once!) and mangled my plate and the bolts holding the bracket up went into the bumper, so the sticker not only looked really great but hid the holes and scratches as well.
About two years ago i was pulled over for a random breath test and the copper pulled off the sticker, removing some paint while he was at it and gave me a complete dressing down. As this copper was in a bad mood he gave me a fine for not displaying the front number plate AND a defect notice, he even made a big deal about my tyres which had nothing wrong with them BTW.
I actually got the idea to do mine from seeing classic cars in the UK with front stickers, im assuming they are legal there. If the RTA offered a front sticker/decal and charged an extra fee i would gladly pay it for the aesthetic value. The RTA seem more intereseted in flogging those tastless personalised plates of number letter combos with a yearly fee.
Its amazing how the safety aspect of vehicle design is pushed so hard yet the RTA want you to drive about with a razor sharp piece of metal stuck out the front of your car, makes no sense to me.
I'm going to get another sticker made up anyway, It looks too good not to!
