my understanding is, earlier models (such as my '90) had a larger than double din space, later models have a proper double din space.

ive recently installed a double din 7" dvd player unit, and it has a gap at the bottom (over 1cm high)

would this be fixed with a later tombstone?

can someone provide me with photos of what it looks like with a later one, as i am struggling to find any...

i am aware of this:

but ofcourse am not going to spend money unless i know it is going to be better than what i have.

Cheers

Yes, the earlier models had a 2.5 din tombstone and the later ones are 2 din. I have a later tombstone in my '91 and it is 2 din.

Also, see this thread, it has pretty pictures :)

The photos in that thread are a before and after of my car.
I can assure you that both the radio is the same and the pocket and blacking plate are both 1 DIN in size.

sorry bensale, the chrome made me think they were different... was the stereo mounted any differently for the new tombstone, or left exactly the same on the original bracket? cheers

The stereo ends up being mounted slightly lower (0.5 DIN) I used the same bracket, but you'll have to re mount it a little lower which isn't too hard. Anouther nice benefit is that the radio will be more flush than it is now as the last of the tombstones are recessed.

Ah a non believer... :P Here is mine.

As mentioned by Ben the later tombstone allows for a much cleaner fit for a 1 din unit.

You could also get a 1.5 Din cubby hole and leave the tombstone as is.

mazda spare parts dealer should be able to get you a NA8 (slightly later model) tombstone panelfit perfectly.
i got one for my NA6, best modification yet i think!
from memory it was $112 for the tombstone panel and $23 or so for the single DIN pocket. the guy gave them to me for $130 all up. :)
