Where to get low comp pistons?

Postby petross » Thu Aug 13, 2009 1:13 pm

Hi guys,

Im new to the forum and wondering if you have any info on where i can get Low comp pistons for an engine that i'll be building?

A normal MX5 1.6L, and a turbo that i will be adding to it later on. I will also be selling the engine that is in my car when i complete the new engine and that is pulling 86kw at the wheels.

Thanks for your help.

Chris

That output sounds impressive - what have you done to it?

Cheers

Matty, it's me.... Dad doesnt know where to get them from, so i suppose its opening my wallet!!

As for what i have done to the engine; Basically we reconditioned the bottom with the best of the best material, lightened fly wheel, new pistons with new rings, new crank shaft, ported the head and cams, WOLF v500 ECU, Jackson Racing's cold air intake... Im not the best with car terminology, my dad Tony from FUL-TECH Automotive specializes in MX5's. He built it and i did whatever i could to help.

That's pretty much it, i think.

Before you go piston shopping, I would ask two questions:
1) what is your goal?
2) what is your budget?

Also, I'd hate to think what insuring a turboed MX would cost at your age...

Based on many reports, the standard bottom end is fine for handling a reasonable amount of boost - the only proviso is that you need to tune the ECU well, have good intercooling, don't let it run lean or over-advance the ignition and it will be fine up to 10-12psi for many km's.

That amount of boost will make a rocket of a road car. So pistons would only be needed if you want more boost than that (though up to 15psi is probably OK with a very good tune and if you treat it well).

Lower CR would only be needed if you wanted to regularly run high boost. And there is a definite downside - the lower the CR, the worse it will be off-boost. You can end up with awesome dyno numbers, but a pig to drive because it won't make any power til 4000+ rpm. Off boost there would be less power, making it harder to drive, and probably slower for normal street driving.

If you are only shooting at those sort of numbers then just strap a snail onto the std engine, there are plenty of people making that sort of power on a stock engine. At that sort of power you will still have something quite a bit quicker than you need and plenty to have fun with. I put the turbo on my std engine a while ago now and even at 0.6 bar its quick, there should be a few people on here that can attest to that. Ran a 13.6 like that for some indication.

what he said^^^. i make around 160wkw on my stock motor just fine. as long as your tune is not too lean and you have a good enough reliable fuel supply/cooling system it will be all good. I have a supercharger and about a 12.5 AFR. I have even had the water temp guage sitting just below full on track without a peep from the engine. doooo it.

Melbourne. I'll be at Sandown next month for the sprints, but the car won't be in 'street guise' at that time.

I go to the Garage Cafe once a month or so? Check the thread in the events section, I'll post up the next time I'm going.

i found the ebay usa has some really good deals at the moment. the us dollar is pretty good at the moment too.

Eagle conrods with arp rod bolts an cp pistons 9.0CR $809usd plus shipping 99usd = something like $1100 aud.

To buy spool rods in aus are 550ish and then arais pistons from rocket industries are $1000! total looking at $1550.
