Anyone installed new speakers on a factory NB8B headunit?

Postby matt9111 » Thu Aug 13, 2009 8:11 pm

G'day guys,

Just wondering if anyone has fitted aftermarket speakers to there NB8B's without changing the headunit?

Because the NB8B already has a factory amplifier? Correct me if I'm wrong, lol

If anyone has, how did the new speakers sound?

Cheers

the factory head unit is crap.

you won't gain much from just upgrading speakers because there still won't be produce enough power to make the most of its potential.

i had my amp installed last night; speakers were clearer and louder at a lower volume than before...
i can't brain today.. i have the dumb..

I put a set of VDO 8 inch 3 ways (They only cost me $20 :D ) in my doors on the std head unit and wiring - definite improvement over stock and with a decent crossover I think they would be great... just haven't got around to it yet, lots more important things to do. :D

Of course it has an amplifier, if there wasn't one, you would not be able to hear any music, but it's tiny which fits in the headunit and does not have enough power, compare it with external amplifer which are 30cm in length and have massive heatsinks, and you can understand the amount of power.

Aftermarket units might have slightly more power, but it is not enough for you to tell a difference and you can't back to back, because the aftermarket speakers will be different.

Most aftermarket speakers will have a higher sensitivity compared to normal speakers. so you will perceive that there is more power, but in reality it's just more sensitive and so at lower volumes it will be louder.
But other things come into play as well, such as larger surface area, ie/ 8" woofers.

Upgrading speakers are good if you want to retain the original headunit.

I thought the NB8B's had a separate amplifier to the head-unit itself?

Hmm.... maybe I'll just wait for this digital radio thing to take off and then I'll get a decent digital radio head unit.

edit: Lol, I know what amplifiers are, I used to have doof doof in my first car that cost around $1000 could rival most $3000 systems....House hifi speakers amped = win! Lol

Cheers

The Bose branded head units have a seperate amp but I dont think any Bose systems were fitted to Aus delivered NB8B's.

I put the pioneer 8" round 3 ways in with the factory NB8A head unit, there was an improvement.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Fli audio make an 8" component set for under $200, not a bad price.

Cheers for your help :), I might go down to glitterbarn today and check a few speakers out.

I can always just buy speakers now and then a new headunit later on,
