After speaking to Zawrilla on the Iceburg run, I thought Id post a map for a possible fun drive from Sydney to Melbourne.

I guess the real question is, what is the most enjoyable drive from Sydney to Melbourne?

From Canberra you've certainly chosen an entertaining route. To get there though, you could always go Campbelltown, Alpine Way to Picton, Old Hume Hwy through the Highlands to Sutton Forest, freeway to Marulan, Bundeena Rd from there into the back of Goulburn, freeway to the Breadelbane turnoff, old hwy through to Gunning, Yass, then freeway to Gundagai, then up to Tumut and along Garry's Special Stage. I'm borrowing heavily from the mighty Alpine Run of March this year. And by this stage it starts becoming a few days worth of driving. But hey, why not?

You may find it a bit more interesting in northern Victoria after passing Tallangatta to cut across on the C533 (Tangambalanga shown as C537 on your map), then C531 to Tawonga/Mt Beauty, cut across on the C536 to Bright/German Town and then continue on the Great Alpine Way.

I was looking into this the other night and thought hugging the entire coastline all the way down and across would be cool. I don't know what the roads are like though. No motorways and lots of small town pit stops.
Cheers,

There's a spectacular piece of road that goes from Gundagai through Tumut,Batlow,Tumbarumba,Corryong,Talangatta, Yackandandah and Beechworth.
Did it last autumn in our 5 and it truly is great driving with some of the best views in the country!

Great work.. this is exactly what I was looking for.
Of course catching a plane is the 'best' way. But the point of this potential trip isn't really getting to Melbourne and spending time there. I've been there a few times and love the city, but thought I could try something different this time, since it's the first time I'll head that way with the MX5.
The trip is basically:
Drive great roads, visit small towns, drive the Great Ocean Road, win a fortune at Crown Casino, visit the damaged bush fire areas and then head back to Sydney on an equally exciting but alternate route.

If you want fun roads go past wakefield raceway to tarago then to braidwood and down the mountain to batemans. along the coast to bega and over the mountain back to cooma.
much more interesting then the fed highway and monaro highway

Spoken like true (red?) NA drivers. *rolleyes*
Seriously though, look at what Google says it should take to go from Bowral, Southern Highlands to St Peters, Adelaide? 15 hours, 30 minutes. We did it in my old IS200 in 11 hours, and that wasn't at ludicrous speed either.
Long distance travel times on Google are a worse case scenario!
