The 3x2 rhs (blue beam bit) i had lying around....
The plastic's are 2.5mm thick x2 (one each side) the end plates i'm putting vertically at the end of the beam which i will bolt through to the seat belt towers are 3mm thick (CAM's spec) x2 , one each end = 11mm all up. measure distance between raised bolt points between seat belt towers and deduct 11mm  cut RHS to length.

Image

The hoop is about 13mm off the roof rib...... I've never done this before and i didn't want it to rub or touch and start squeaking while driving with the roof up,
so i left that much room for movement.
Image

The hoops are basically 380x380..... but i asked for 2 deg of angle on each leg so it dosn't look so boxy..... they gave me extra length because i told them i was yet to confirm actual height..... Nice guys at Merridian 8)

Image

This shot shows the clearance needed where the roof hinges and the hoop take up point will be and the 6mm plate it will sit on.

Image

Its tight but with some patients and grinding....it shall clear nicely......

I'm really enjoying your build thread, thanks for sharing everything with us.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

A little more work done on the roll bar today........ Me and my house mate have built cage's before but never on a car that the roof folds down......there's lots to take into account.......not just a matter of throwing in a few bars and poking at it with a bit of tig wire :|
This is my house mate's cage we did in his silvia......
Image

The hoop base plates are welded to the main base bar end plates..... everything else is just tacked atm until we are sure it all fits and works with the roof.
Image

Image

Image

Very handy house mate to have 8) qualified welder by trade......I can weld.....but nothing like this guy!
Image

The hoop brace's take a bit of work to make sure there is no ugly gaps. scribing the end onto the hoop is done first as the other end is just a simple angle cut.
Image

I intend on making a gusset that runs along the rear leg base plate to spread the load over a greater area.
Image

see how much thicker the hoop base plates are than the end plates on the hoop base bar.
Image

Image

This is how i am going to tie the rear legs to the hoops..... Nice, simple and strong
Image

Should be finished by the end of this weekend....

Have the local constabulary given you any extra attention?

Car looks great,

How much work was involved in moving the air filter to the drivers side of the engine bay?

I assume it's just a matter of extending the AFM wires and possibly some sort of mount. I think it makes the engine bay look much better.

Thanks

The pod filter install is easy as ! You just need the right size pod filter and be careful with the amount of space you have for the silicon bend, as they vary in radius at the bend, i had to cut back the one i bought to fit it, the airflow meter (afm)and the pod in the amount of space there is.
Measure all the diameter sizes you need .....the throttle body, the afm...... the pod you buy should go straight onto the afm...... i used a pod with a 75mm hole and the standard rubber spacer ring out of the stock air box to reduce the hole size to 70mm.......which is the diam of the afm!

I made no bracket.....The silicon bend holds itself up because it is so short there is no sag......

Pref take the afm with you when you go to get the pod and silicon bend..... so you get the right one's......and if need be you can convert the mm to inch's with the converter in your phone while your at the shop.....

You need to run a oil catch can off the breather line from the cam cover (not shown in my pic) (will be making one soon).....

'edit'...... and i just un-picked the afm wires from the plastic conduit far enough to reach its new location, then just taped it all back up! no need to cut or add wire.

Not as yet....(touch wood) its only from the side that the mx5 really looks low...... but then the whole car is deceivingly small. I've dríven past/beside 5 po po cars so far and it dosn't seem to offend them. Prob because i have a stock exhaust still, so my car is dead quiet :P until i open up the throttle and the induction noise kicks in 8)

That roll bar looks strangely familiar, almost like it was inspired by one I've seen before. Still, I reckon that box section is a plus...
