That would be a no. Only the metal plates issued by Vicroads are legal. Get a slimline plate if you don't have one.

Being that people just love reversing into me I am seriously considering options on mounting the number plate - some great ideas here. Has anyone tried using high density foam rubber behind the plate?

Hot Rodders has put some adhesive foam on the back of his plate bracket to help protect the bumper.

I might even consider a pressure sensitive alarm input so if the plate is forced back more than a few millimetres it trips the alarm .....

a standard microwave sensor does that, if you tune it spot on.

i was in a car park last time and a ute came quite close to my car... my car beeped 4 times to warn them that they were too close.

Not sure where I'll mount the number plate yet but if it's in front of the bar I will use the foam rubber.

Should think about that before I put the bar on, would not have helped with the last guy who backed into me - he was Deaf

Put a switch behind your plate attached to the horn. Use it to touch park !

no.. it used to sound when someone/something came very close to the side mirrors, but i toned down the sensitivity.. so it only detects big masses.

Unfortunately it will never happen here, in the UK they have major problems with people using tape / pens or paint to modify their plates for stealing petrol etc.
I like the plate mounting from underneath the car - been playing with various positions before my new bar goes on this sunday.
Someone has the plate mounted on the lower part of the bumper opening and has a spring hinge - the plate drops flat at around 30kmh.

like the sound of that - i saw post with a photo of an na with the # plate mounted down low - not bad, but even better a little higher & hinged!

So if I get a stick-on front plate with the correct size, colours and font etc from the UK (which will be missing the VIC dwn the side) and put it somewhere reasonably visible, how much unwanted attention might it attract and how much might that attention cost me in AUD?

Dave, you could get something made locally that replicates look, but is slightly smaller. That way, at least when mobile, it would attract little, if any, attention. However, when stationary it would be another matter...
