jules wrote:Well it's a start. Juffa's old Malibu had them. The palm trees are on the front fender and the blue and aquamarine lines run along the bodywork.

I've seen quite a few, but most owners remove them along with the front Mazda bumper sticker.
Juffa should have some better images.

I have never seen these on a non-Australian car.

Thanks Jules. Yes, that is Malibi Stacey. I was the 2nd owner and they were on her from the beginning. My current Malibu (Tweety) didn't come with them. Not sure if they were removed by a previous owner or not applied in the first place. I did ask someone about them once and we wondered if they were applied by some dealers to try and get the Malbu model moving off the lots, similar to the 7 or so Malibus with a Red Leather interior. I have seen a couple of those.

Will see if I have some other photos that are clearer...as a side note I had forgotten about the front mudflaps on Stacey....must get some for Tweety.

Found this photo from Sept 2001. Just before I sold her :(

Image

I'll let you zoom (Zoom Zoom) in on the photo.

In all honesty I rememer the decal on the front guard as being a wave (as in ocean) not a palm tree....but it has been a while...and the memory ain't what she used to be.

StanTheMan wrote:It came out just after I bought my mariner blue NA6.. I was spewing.

it was also sold for less than what I paid for my Mariner blue as a special edition.

Its possible that it was only the australian version which got the palm tree & stripe along the door.

The Malibu Gold didn't sell that well when first released. I have heard from various sources that the Mazda Austrlai Managing Director did not like the colour and had to be convinced it was a good idea. I was also told that the Malibu Gold was not a true limited edition, but that an original batch of 55 were brought in, but as they didn't sell too well no more were brought in. Having had Two Malibus and a Mariner Blue I know what you mean Stan... I found it hard to choose between the colours... If Smurfette didnt have so many mechancial issues I would proabably have kept her.

Definitely palm trees (although yours really look like waves). There's one I see all the time at Broadbeach.
Love the wheels Juffu BTW.

I remember Biggles telling me one time that I made a BIG mistake buying a Malibu, because he thought I would never be able to sell a car with such a limited desirability on the colour. He thought it would not age well....

bwhahahahahahahahaha

My sister was thinking about buying a new yellow one when they came out. I thought it was a disgusting colour at the time but I really like it now, especially with NB8A wheels. For some reason the MX5 yellow seems to have weathered much better over time than a lot of yellows from other manufactures. I saw a yellow Monaro the other day that seemed to have changed shade to something not as good looking as what I remember when they were new. Similar with the SLK yellow, it seems to go darker and dirty looking as it ages. Maybe MX5 drivers just take better care of their paint.
