YES!!!! I honestly thought that if i ever got to see one, i would undoubtly be sitting in a museum. It was a real treat to see it, hear it, and talk to the people who have owned it since 1966. It's one of only 2 genuine D-Types in Australia, and was imported into QLD in the 60's for racing purposes. It had a full restoration in the 80's, so is only used for special events now, and spends the rest of it's time parked inside a bubble!

Indeed, at times i was overcome by the urge to don a tweed cap and break out a pipe. But the mixture of metal is really quite good, not often you get to see these kinds of match-ups:

40'000kms Service
The Roadster went in for it's 40K service this week. All good, no software upgrades, and the car always feels great after fluid changes and a nice torqueing too *bom tish* :D

Was a little concerned about leaving my car at the mercy of a dealer service when it had it's McGuard lug nuts on. I instructed them that under no circumstances should rattle guns be used on the nuts, otherwise they could be buying me a new nuts and a new adaptor as they can strip easily. The guy dutifuly wrote it all down on the job card, for what it was worth. But in the afternoon when i came too collect, car was washed, cleaned, and all the nuts looked ok. Apparently they had actually supervised the removal & replacement of the wheels to ensure no rattle guns were used. It's a busy workshop at the quietest of times, so i was somewhat impressed by this.


MX 5 Club - Wisemans Run
Did a run down to Wisemans Ferry with the club last week. Across to Mangrove Mountain, down to Yarramalong Valley and then back up to Peats Ridge, jump on the freeway briefly, and then up the dual lanes to Pie In The Sky in time for the monthly Coffee & Lies meet there.

Truly a great run (as always!). Many years ago i passed the MX5 Club on Mangrove Montain while out with another club (Renaults?). So it was great to finally drive through there in the Roadster with dozens of other MX5's along as well. I've been doing recreational drives through there for so long now, and it was great to rediscover that road in the Roadster with other like-minded 5ers!

Only took a few happy snaps, having too much fun behind the wheel.

MX 5 Club - Bathurst Run
So Sunday was the second running of Stefan's Mountain Madness - i had to pass on the last invite i received to this great run, so with Roadster in hand, i was not going to miss it this time.

Sunday turned out to be a perfect day. We assembled at 8:30 AM at Penrith Maccas, and after the time honoured splitting of the group earlier on, we all headed up Springwood Road to Blackheath. After a quick regroup there we continued over the mountains towards Lithgow, taking a couple of very nice b-road detours along the way. We then detoured down through Tarana (yes where I was over the Easter longweekend) and then on to Bathurst.

A little unfortunate, but when we arrived at Mount Panorama it was partially closed as there was a hillclimb in progress - a local Bathust Motorsport Club i believe. Some people seemed genuinely upset about this. To be honest, i thought it was great because, really, Mount Panorama is not the same without the sights and sounds of Motorsport. And there was some really varied and eclectic metal coming up the hill, including a phat sounding Auto Union replica!

It is actually the fourth time this run has been held. :mrgreen:

Slammer came up with this run when he was the Club Captain a number of years ago. Garry then decided to run it a few years later & it was again a huge sucess. I've now run it twice But I'm not really comfortable with calling it my own. Really all the credit should go to Slammer.

The one run I can claim my own is the Putty Run. A good friend of mine & I used to do it in his wifes WRX & decided we should make a club run out of it. He is now overseas so I can claim it as my own. :mrgreen: :lol: :lol:


But apart from that I had the pleasure of Driving Coffee Bosses car on the Bathurst run. What a pleasure of a car it is to drive. If ever I have enough money to upgrade to an NC. Whatever Coffee Boss has done to his car I would do to my own.

Coffee Boss you shoud be proud. What a fantastic ride you have.

Ah... thanks for the history lesson! Hey... mny thanks for the comments, really.

You know i'll always have a soft spot for your red beast, afterall, i popped my NA MX5 driving cherry in that car. It was awesome then, and is still awesome now. Ever since i have craved the raw appeal of an NA!

Honestly though? I love them, but particularly since i'm under 'post-wedding budgetry constraints', i cannot bring myself to part with that much money for an item which is basically cosmetic.

I think an exhaust will be next. But i'm in no hurry (unless i'm at Wakefield :D ).

I have to say that was the best 30 odd minutes I have spent reading about another's MX5!
Your detail and accuracy in whatever modification is a great benchmark!

You must have spent endless hours into researching, but well worth it!

Many thanks for the comments Lukey, Phil! It's nice to have vindication for the time and effort spent :D

Of course updates are generally limited to the time and money i have available to spend on the car. But this thread is essentially designed to be the type of thread i enjoy. Therefore i try to make it something that illustrates the MX5 experience, the enjoyment and advantages of being involved with a car club, and hopefully a resource to current and respective NC owners on what to do and what not to do! In short, the type of thread i look for when browsing for entertainment or information.

I've been on car forums for, yikes, nearly a decade now? A forum like MX5Cartalk abounds with threads like these, and that's what makes it so good.

Had a detail last week by good friend Glenn from Autoprep. For those who don't know my past life running the Altezza Club of Australia, I know Glenn thanks to his excellent taste in cars (i won't go into details except to say Glen's RS200 Altezza is one of the best examples in the world, no question).

Anyhow, exchanged my Roadster for Autoprep's Pimpin' Camry...

I reluctantly handed the Camry back the following afternoon and picked up my Roadster.

The results are awesome. Full detail inside and out including engine bay, and he has removed some nasty scratches and touched up a few chips around the front. I'm exceptionally pleased with the result. Drove the car home in the pouring rain (an hour and a half's drive) and it was basically dry when i pulled into the carport at home (150kms away) - the paint is exceptionally smooth now. No, i didn't have the good camera handy, but suffice to say the car is pretty close to the way it was 12 months ago, with the added bonus of the mods i have now. I love the way a good detail works like a time machine!

Also pleased to hear Glenn comment on how impressed he was with the condition of the bodywork. He seemed geuinely suprised that the car has passed 40'000kms. It's nice to have all that time spent cleaning the car vindicated by someone in the know! There's alot to be said for regular washing waxing and the occasionally clay barring.

Glenn and his team work at Toyota HQ in Caringbah - Toyota/Lexus is Glenn's primary customer. Autoprep's main role is during press days, photo and advertising shoots, Motor Shows and that sort of thing. They deliver the cars and prep them all. So, when you see all the shiny new cars on the Toyota and Lexus stands at the Motorshow - that's Autoprep's handywork. They also do lots of other cool stuff, including trackday delivery and prep for private customers, and for times when, say, Neil Bates is doing hot laps of Wakefield in an ISF.

Anyway, Glenn and his team are available by appointment - which means you get a small tour of their workshop at Toyota, which is often a cool thing. Thanks to Glenn i've had a close up look at some pretty serious metal over the years that he's had in his care, such as the JGTC Supra and the old Toyota F1 car that were out here for a while. On this visit he had a great little curio - a Morris Major. 4 on the floor, and with only 800 miles on the odo!

One owner, it had recently been purchased for the princely sum of $500.00 and now Autoprep are going to bring it up to concours standard. Which will not be difficult considering the low mileage and condition. The interior had that classic old car aroma.

Oh, and if your wondering why all the rain now? Well, now you know. It started raining the day i picked up my car, and basically has not stopped since. When i wash the car, at least a few hours of rain almost always follows. So expect these showers to last till the end of the month!

A Wet Weekend
So, ticked off two items on my MX5 Club to-do list weekend before last - met up with the ACT Chapter on one of their runs, and dropped in on an MX5 Club trackday.

Didn't take the 'big camera' so excuse the iPhoneness of my images.

Began with breakfast in Collector at Lynwood Cafe - do check this place out if you ever go past, the food is fantastic. Be warned though, lunchtime on a weekend, you can be hard-pressed to get a seat.

We followed them to Crookwell for lunch. Truly a great bunch of people, the Canberra crew seems to be quite a tightly knit bunch! Afterall, a good number of the people i met had all been on a 'cruise' to Tasmania only last year! *envious*

I suppose that's the thing with the MX5 - i has broad appeal in terms of the types of drivers, age-groups and demographics it attracts. Still, it would be nice to see these age-groups mingle a bit more! I for one could listen to driving tales for hours on end!

In short - an entertaining lunch :D

Oh - side note. So there is a car restorer of some considerable note located in the country town of Crookwell. They hold lunch days and the like at their premises. Many of the cars they have on site have been flown from the US, even UK! to Sydney and trailered down to Crookwell for their restoration. Amazing what you find in Australian country towns. (And the Roadster is a great car to go exploring with :D )

Begrudgingly, I said my farewell to the Canberra crew in Crookwell - would have been nice to follow them on some of the newly sealed roads west of Crookwell. However there was a trackday in progress at Wakefield, and I had already bumped into Glenn & others that morning at Sutton Forest. I also had my young sister with me, soon to be licensed, so I was keen to illustrate the many ways the MX5 Club entertains itself :D

It was actually a great day for spectating at Wakefield - i don't think i've ever seen so many cars looping it!! Again, it's testament to the pedigree of the club and the car that so many people were out their in every group having a real go! It was great to see. Of particular note were Guran's many excursions, including a, shall we say, near flawless 360 degree spin out of turn 10, and Turbo Boy's showboating out of turn 9 and down the back straight, sideways most of the way. Brilliant stuff!

By the time i had returned home, we had covered about 500kms in mostly wet conditions. The Michelin Preceda 2's really shone in the wet conditions, even when it was bucketing down rain. So far, they are the best tire i have used to date.

The recent detail is also really proving it's worth. Paint is still very smooth, and the Roadster was remarkably clean after spending 500 kms on wet roads.

Truly a fun car no matter what the conditions :D

I knew I recognised your car from somewhere...
When we first stopped for coffee I asked a couple of people who owned it, but nobody seemed to know (well the people I asked at least). When I pulled up next to you at Crookwell I thought it looked remarkably like one of the guys off the forums but somehow didn't put it together.

Looks good in the metal though :) And a photo of mine too
