Well that's a stupid idea, better idea would be to send them a link to this thread and ask them to defend themselves.

A few like CT have worked hard to promote their products, they should try and help enthusiasts rather than treating them like idiots because when someone finds a good solution we all jump on board, they could be looking a gift horse in the mouth all because some dyno operator thinks that the settings you paid him to create are golden and some sort of intellectual property.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Aftermarket ECU with lock codes

Postby Novice1 » Wed Jun 24, 2009 5:17 pm

Well, I spoke to a work colleague today who is also a solicitor.
She said that the dealer, manufacturer is going against the Fair Trade Practices Act.
I, have downloaded the complaints form which has to be lodged with the appropriate agency, in this case the ? Vehicles and ????? authority.
They must respond to the complaint within 10 days and a decision handed down within 30 days of that.
I, am waiting for a master code from a secret source to unlock the program, before I burn my bridges with the Haltech dealer/tuner.
Rotten eggs sounds great Andrew. Actually, I would like to dump a couple in their Evo racecar:) LOL.
Oh yeah I wouldn't know an oxygen sensor if one hit me in the face.

Latest news:
Guy who stated he had master codes now says he doesn't have them.
Plan A hope to god its just a loose oxygen sensor and doesn't need a retune.
Plan B talk to the dealer who has put on password EMS. Ask him to remove password, which I am damn sure he will say no to, plus not to delete fuel maps.
Plan C Get dealer to retune car.
Plan D Check with Fair Trade Practices that they are acting illegally, before proceeding with complaint. I, do not want to piss off the dealer, when he is the only one who can tune my car.
I, have spent a lot of money already and don't want to start from scratch with a base map.

Aftermarket ECU with lock codes

Ive been trolling the haltech forums for a while as I own a haltech, aftermarket support appears to be selective, depending on who the customer is; thats what I have noticed. This is not to say that there products arent great.

Anywho on the forum numerous E8/E11 customers have mentioned that when they changed the battery it somehow scrambled the ECU and brought it back to default; the maps needed to be reloaded.

Whether this fault is related to a particular firmware update is not mentioned. If all else fails and no one is willing to unlock it, this might be an alternative to try; unfortuantly you will loose your pre-existing map should it work.

Aftermarket ECU with lock codes

I have been watching this with some interest.

I ran an E8 in the GM for several years, tuned by Hitman (W Sydney) and Autotech (?) here in Canberra. No problems. No locked ECU.

ECU now resides in the racecar, tuned by Jake here at Mitchell - ditto.

Seems that we have to ask this question when getting a tune from someone we haven't used before

CT, you watching this? Any inside info?

Perhaps on Haltech's list of tuners they should indicate those who lock their tune, as a service to unsuspecting customers. Surely the tuners wouldn't mind if they think their case is so strong...

I never met a horsepower I didn't like (thanks bwob)

NB SE - gone to the dark side (and loving it 8) )

It seems ludicrous to me that the software is freely available at the Haltech site, yet a tuner can lock you out.

I was thinking the same thing.

We had a guy at work who used to have a password breaker on a floppy disc.

He knew everyones password. Boy did he piss people off though when they found it and rightly so.

My daughter who works with solicitors recommended that unless I was issued with a disclosure statement, (which I wasn't) outlining that they are within their legal rights to lock software, they are up s++t creek without a paddle.

Apparently, the dos software will work with an earlier E6 system but not the E8.

My son sent me the following article which outlines different Australian tuners, dealers opinions on the subject.

Though it seems to be common practice I still don't believe it is a legal practice.

I, received the following email from Haltech today.

The ECU can be password protected from the end user - This is to allow the ECU to be acceptable in accordance with the RTA.
Furthermore the ECU can be password protected to protect the tuners intellectual property. You can erase this password at any time, as well as erasing the tuners map.

Please call me to talk this through further or include a phone number with your return mail.

i don't get the IP bit, you paid them to work on your behalf to tune the software to suit your hardware. You should own the IP.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Seems haltech is comming on board, are they willing to erase the password without loosing the map or will it be a format loosing the pre-existing map?
