dunno about Sydney, but it's usually the same in major centres, I recently bought a set of PP2's in 205/45/17 for our NC @ $279 ea. Apparently this particular size is fairly scarce at the moment, with the next shipment due in to be priced @ $319 :shock: a big hike thanks to economic conditions..........personally, I wouldn't care how much they are, for quality, they're the top of the tree for performance road tyres :twisted:

Mr_Q, - 205/45/16, $275. I didn't shop around too much, but that seemed a fair price at the time (mid Feb 09).

Charlie Brown, most tyre dealers will take trade ins. The sooner you do that, the more you'll get for them...

you won't get 225's to sit nicely on your rims Ibiza, & you'd have to get some silly profile like 35 to keep rolling diameter the same............next set that goes on our NC will be 215/40 instead of 205/45.........main reason, the 215's are a more popular size & cheaper.

btw with your tyres 205 = 205mm, & 40 profile means that the sidewall is 40% of the tread width high. :mrgreen:

Thanks everyone for your feedback etc.

I've gone with the RE050A's again for $340ea fitted, balanced etc.

I was offered the RE001's for $252ea fitted, balanced etc but to many complaints on fourms about how they handle in the wet.

This seems to be the defacto tyres thread..so here goes..

I need new tyres for OEM NA8 rims...What should I get without resorting to R888s? I'm tossing up between RE001s and C.Drives...

Definitely RE001s over C-Drives. I've had both. RE001s were clearly better all round - grip, wet, noise, suppleness, lap times (4 secs better at PI , same car same day).

Not sure about the C Drives but after almost 2 years on S Drives 205/45/16 I would stick with the Bridgestones. I picked up some Re001s on the weekend for the rear tyres (don't know how that happened :lol: ) and the difference is amazing. Grip in the wet straight from the word go. The S Drives took about 1000ks before they "scrubbed in" (as most people on this thread notice) but if it rained it was drift city. With still about 30% tread left, hard acceleration in second or sometimes third in the wet was asking to be thrown into the truck in the next lane. The S Drives were also very noisy.

A really interesting & useful thread for relative newbies like me.

My take so far re track days is to start at around 36psi and work it out from there....

And class 1 in NSW means I (probably?) can't run RT615's in 14's so would probably run 001's? Seems Vic is more liberal with the standard class

and for 15's, RE050A's get a good rap though pricey, PP2's get a good rap from just about everybody esp in the wet, and 001's come in second or third, but are a fair bit cheaper.

I'm after 14's for track days etc so it looks like 001's .......... anyone recommend anything else in a 14?

Hi Guys,
New around here, and not racing because the wife won't let me play with her NC LE....yet.. :twisted:
We managed about 40k out of the PP1's fitted to the car then went looking for new rubber.
I spoke to a couple of MX5 people and was steered toward the PP2 but unfortunately atm there is no stock in Sydney.
Looked further and settled on Maxxis MAZ1, an aggressive looking directional tyre with Silica in a 205/45/17
So far so good, much much quieter than the worn PP1, and the car's feeling more nimble with far better directional change.
Ride is softer, but that's probably just as a result of the extra tread.

Thanks for the tip. Maxxis MA-Z1 Victra are available in a couple of 14" sizes which might fit the NA6 stock wheel size. The 185/50R14 is too small diameter such that speed is reduced by 6.4% relative to the stock size -- this means they're not street legal on an NA6. The 205/60R14 is larger diameter and speed is increased by 4.2% relative to stock size -- again, this is not street legal for NA6. So it looks like these tyres won't suit stock 14" wheels on an NA6. Would still be very interested to hear more about how they go in the larger sizes though.

Might be worth checking with a dealer, I used Jax at Sutherland.
When I looked, the 45/17 was only listed as available in a 215 however a 205 was available.
Maybe there's a 55 profile available in the 14".

Current circumstances have hastened my need for new tyres. So it seems RE001s, even though Aussie made, seem to be very good. However only with 185/60.

Falken ZE912, as well as Federal ss535, along with C.drives, have 195/65. SO slightly wider and chunkier tyres. (Love the chunkier look :P) So I'm torn right now whether to stick with my initial decision on RE001s, or go with either Falken or Federal. Any suggestions?

:lol: Well there's this one brand I would stay well clear of....

Falken and Federal make some good tyres, and Kumho have been getting some rave reviews lately and are well priced too. Not sure exactly what models Kumho have available in the size you need though. I think it is KU36's or similar. Very good on price - similarly priced to those RE001 things.

C.Drives aren't really a "performance" tyre. Their S.Drives cater to that market.
