Cheyne's Roadster Photo Diary UPDATE PAGE 1 - 23/05/09
This weekend was one of the worst i have ever had, i will start it off like this...
On friday, Wazman, rocka, bensale, doogle and myself decided to go on a nice drive through Mt Donna Buang and the Reefton and black spurs.
The day started off brilliantly, it was sunny, good roads, no traffic and some great cars. It was one of the best days i had had in years.
Soon after we stopped off in seville to have a quick break. After that we continued on to Warburton.
On the way we had a little incident. A lady in her old 626 wagon locked up in front of us to avoid a metal post. Bensale locked up and literally touched her car at 1km/ph, i stopped just in time and missed ben by 1mm, wazman locked up and cracked my rear bumper and damaged his front and the other two had enough clearence to safely stop. after exchanging details and discovering she didnt have insurance, we went off to Warburton for coffee.
After Warburton we proceeded up Mt Donna Buang, we got half way up and discovered it was snowing! It was amazing to experience, we ducked into a carpark to take a quick few snaps, best thing about the snow and a big open space is you can get sideways at only 10kmph!
On the way down i noticed the roads were a tad slippery, i was being pretty cautious, we got about half way down the mountain when i saw a wide open right hander approaching, the car in front lost a bit of traction so i decided to slow down a little, as i turned in, the car simply didnt turn, i tried everything i knew as a driver but still kept sliding, and went off the road and head on into a gum tree at 60 kmph, speed limit was 80. I hit my head on the soft top latch on the a pillar and cut it, my hands bent the steering wheel quite badly, the chassis were so damaged that the seat would not move and the boot would not close properly.
The ambo's came very soon after, all the guys were incredibally brave and supportive and did everything the could to make sure i was looked after, i am amazed, i got away with 17 stitches in the head, a sore chest and back and a badly broken heart for my little roadster...
Bensale met me at the hospital and made sure i was taken care of, i was in a neck brace for 5 hours, lying down and not being able to move, ben gave me water when ever it was needed and stuck with me until it was hometime, then he drove me home, all i can say mate is that your a fantastic friend, not many people would do what you did for me.
So, as it is, i wont be getting back into an mx5 anytime soon, i need a more practical car, im going to try to find something to fill the void, it will be tough, but hey! it will have to do for a while. Eventually i will find myself in another 5.
Here are some photos of the wreck...
So, this doesnt mean i will be leaving the mx5 community, i have made many great friends on this forum and in the club. Lets just consider this the end of my first chaper of mx5 ownership and a giant learning curve.
Cheers guys.

I think they heard the "Oh f&&k!" in Lillydale.
Dude, I'm so sorry to hear this. Even more glad that you're okay though. That's what counts.

from the description in the other thread, i really hadn't expected the damage to be THAT bad. i'm rather shocked at those pictures, and just very very thankful you got out of it with relatively minor injuries.
I witnessed a similar crash recently on the race track and his car (nb8a) was not as bad as that, even thought the speeds were much higher. he walked away unscathed too, thanks to the airbags maybe? i was very worried as i came around the corner and saw his car, and very thankful when he waved that he was ok. so i can imagine how ben and the other guys were feeling when they saw this....
anyway, all my best for a speedy recovery mate.
