I was just reading details of Flying Miata's Stroke Engine and saw an option of H beam rods and main caps. Which got me thinking, when do you really need billet steel main caps? and has anyone actually had to install them?

When you're seeking large amounts of torque (ie a stroker or FI motor).
When I built the motor for the blue pig, FM didn't have the caps available so we made our own. They seem to be holding out well

when you say "large amounts of torque" what would be a rough starting point you would need main caps

600 Nm was the limit on standard caps, or so my engineer said. Personally I now think if the tune is right the actual destructive torque would be a lot higher (the ARPs would fail first)
Speedworks in Ringwood Vic did the machining and Argo in NSW sold us the blanks. Once you have the blanks the machining can be done by any good machinist
