Pearl White NB8B ???

Hi Guys,

I need your honest opinion & suggestion.

Currently Im doing website project for a panel shop here in Melbourne, the owner is very keen to do contra deal.
Now here's my dilemma, My car's silver paint is literally in perfect cond. It has only done 34K KM, no scratches, dings ect. I really took a good care of it.

The only idea that kinda peek my interest is re-spraying the whole car in Lexus Pearl white. The only thing is the engine bay will be left silver. The rest like door jamb, boot lining, ect will be resparyed. For obvious reason, the engine bay will be left as it its.

This will be $5K plus respray so Im confident that the job will be top notch but...If one day Im selling my car, it may detracts some buyer as they would suspect that the car has been in accident. Reason being, obviously it's not Mazda OEM colour and the engine bay is still silver.

Let me know your thought, is it worths doing?
The sensible side of me says why respray a car that has perfectly good paint? Keep the cash , buy shares, ect.
While the other side think, how cool would it be to have the only pearl white NB8B, I love Lexus White Pearl

Im not keen on spending $5K on anything else on my car like engine, interior ect. Either this or just keep the money in the bank.

Let me know what you guys think, please give me constructive feedback rather than just 'DO IT!!!' or 'DON'T!!!'
Im keen to hear from people that had their car fully re-sprayed before also.

No, please for the love of god don't waste your money and time. Just get that money and run for the hills, put it into something that will make it grow.

There is no other reason than just because you like the colour and that you can. Which is not a good enough reason.

Personally thou I have resprayed a whole car just because I didn't like the colour, the car was going to be a show car and that I got a professional job done for real cheap.

It depends on how you feel after you've slept on it a couple of nights.

Pearl paintwork looks awesome in the flesh (in a past life I had a 1993 Mitsi GTO with pearl black paint, and it's still a very fond memory, as the light reflected green/blue on the front guards, blue on the doors and almost purple at the back end - but it still looked black - and I'd consider the colour again for an MX5 to create a decent one-off model)

You have to weigh up your heart (love the colour) and your head (resale value and originality if you're selling to an enthusiast).

At the end of the day (it is night), it's your decision, and yours alone.

If however, you're after a vote, or opinions - I say go for it! You'll have a rare MX5!

How much are you taking in cash? is it $5k? If so, then I would take the cash.
If it's less, but more than $2,500; then I still would take the cash.
If it's less than $2,500, then I would go for the paint job making sure you have full receipts and you make sure they do top-shelf work that is worth the $5k.

I get the feeling that you are leaning toward the cash side of things anyways ....think of the other things you've always wanted for your car that WON'T raise suspicion come selling time.

PS: I also really like the Lexus white

Take the money and run, sure you'll have one of a kind, but what if they stuff it...!!!
and your right, I would be suspicious if I was buying a car and it was a different colour to the norm, and I would be thinking it must have been damaged no one would paint over a perfectly good paint if it wasn't.
Take the money buy an average NA and paint that Lexus White, or spend the money and turbo your car the colour it is.

Personally - if I was looking at buying a car and found one that had one colour on the outside and a different colour on the inside, I wouldn't buy it.

Take the money and use it for something worthwhile. Go to Japan and check out JDM stuff or something. Save it. Invest it - do something that adds value. If I had $$$ for every $$$ I'd spent of car stuff, I'd be in St Moritz or Monaco or somewhere like that, drinking coffee and watching ski-bunnies or Ferraris.

I'm with UA - a colour change would scare me away from buying the car. Plus you are painting it a unique colour, thus narrowing down your market even more.
I'd much prefer a pocket full of cash in these uncertain times.

AB7, i wouldn't spend the money on a new paint job.. unless it was a car you know you are going to keep for a very long time..

as others have mentioned.. sleep on it. give it a week, because it is a fairly big step, and it's a lot of money to part with.

i think at this stage, don't go with it.. (i thought your car was for EOI?). i think a bit of doubt now will end up being a lot of regret later after you've resprayed her..

I guess instead of offering my opinion on what you should do, i would offer my opinion of what would happen if you do spend it on the car, rather than not spend it.

if you do spend it on the car, you would probably have a fantastic looking car. You will get many JDM points from the boyracer crowd. When it comes to selling it, it might be a little difficult to shift due to unoriginal colour (and mismatched colour panels). In addition, it is very unlikely to add any value to the car at all.

if you don't spend it on the car, you could invest it somewhere. Assets are very cheap at the moment (i'm referring to the stock market) and many companies are now trying to increase their equity and reduce their debt, offering share placements at quite good discounts. These represent a great opportunity! And i guess doing this will net you maybe a 370z?

so i guess, take your pick.

DON'T DO IT !

Unless it's a show car and it's never parked in public don't do it. Chances are some tool will bash their car door on it within a week or so of the respray and you'll be emo.

Sure it will look great but not $5k great, it may even lower the value of your car.

I would not even think about such a deal. A repaint has to be done perfectly- firewall inside doors remove trims etc etc- a big job if done properly. Take the payment in good old fashioned cash.

I always have this love/ hate relationship with my car. I just don't drive it enough due to work, but tonight I took her for a long drive and I love her the way it is.

A perfect respray is not cheap yeah, but it all depends if you care what colour the inside of your doors are!
