It runs! I drove it to work!

Idles like a ported rotary though, dunno if thats Cams + stock computer or if i got the cam timing a little wrong!

Also need to check if the gearbox is bolted in OK, it bounces up and down under power

Point remains though, we built a motor and it hasn't blown up yet, and it makes the car move!

It plays on your nerves having built your own engine though.. i keep wanting to duck into the carpark and check if the crank has fallen out while its parked or something!

*TURBO* Engine Build - Now Running - video soon!

Bugger... It leaks oil, appears to be from the rear seal or sump, either way its engine out again...

Oh well i know what im doing for the next few weekends then

EDIT: Having look at the photos of the build, looks like its the sump rear seal not the crank seal

*TURBO* Engine Build - Coming out to fix oil leak :<

Postby adamjp » Tue May 26, 2009 10:48 pm

The seal between the sump and the block at the back can be a PITA to get in right. Spews oil all over the inside of the bellhousing. It can be easily fixed with the engine in the car. But get a tube of aluminium friendly silicone before you go in.

Don't ask me how I know this.....but there is a gearbox drop in your immediate future.

Yes, we had loads of trouble getting it in right, it kept kind of... squeezing out of the back of the engine.

Oooh... so you ca get to it with the gearbox off, im assuming the sump needs to drop too does it?

And then just attack the join with sealant?

PS - Thanks muchly Adam, this may have just saved me a LOT of work

1. Remove Gearbox.
2. Remove Flywheel (not so easy, but doable).
3. Back off the bolts at the rear of the sump (makes it easier, but your sump won't drop down - it is glued on remember).
4. Fit/refit the seal in question and goop it up good with the silicone. I think I ended up basically building a wall of silicone that sealed the gap.
5. Put it all back together.

I did it in 4 hours one night with the help of my father. Your time may vary.

Sweet, although to look at it, the rear sump bolts are quite loose. might torque them up and see if it stops leaking first lol

That's my solution to all leaks - give it another half turn with the spanner to fix it!

Err... about an entire sump a week lol, its like you park it after a drive and a puddle appears :P.

Got the cam timing sorted though, and even without the ECU it runs sweet, Idles ok @ 1200 rpm, and goes hard (even with my current self imposed 5krpm redline)

Only issue is that after driving for a while it seemed to have some kind of ECU or ignition related fail, would idle fine, but opening the throttle would give no more power than idle, and it would drop on to 3 cyls. any hints what to check?
