Engine fails to start

Postby JBT » Sat May 23, 2009 4:04 pm

You may have found the culprit trader. If it quits again and you have no fuel contents indicated (but you know that there is fuel in the tank  ), that fuel tank plug (wiring side or tank side) may be dodgy.

If the AFM switchery is playing up, you should still have contents indicated and the fuel pump test system should run the fuel pump (with ignition on) and bypass the AFM switch.

Engine fails to start

Postby trader » Wed May 27, 2009 8:57 am

I've been away but now back on the track of my gremlin. Rechecked wiring from last week and found that when I put a test light on the red/blue and the black earth connector at the tank, with the ignition on (and also when I turn motor over) there is no light. Same with the yellow (fuel sender). However when I earth each wire thru the body I have power in both cases. Exactly the same when I bridge the diagnostic connnectors. Seems to me I have an earth problem. The wiring dia does not tell me where the the two ground wires meet and earth. Anyone got any info on this?
Thanks

There is a common earth point in the engine bay on the pax side near the firewall. Tends to collect water and junk there so worth checking/cleaning. I don't know where there may be others.

As JBT said, under the windscreen washer container there is a connection where a number of earth/ground wires come together. Undo the 10mm bolt and clean the area and the bolt to ensure a good earth/ground. There is also an earth/ground strap on the rear passenger side of the block. There is another on the PPF under the car, and of course the battery.

Have you removed/replaced anything lately, no matter how far removed you think it is from this problem?

Thanks Russell, just what I wanted to know. I will check them out tomorrow. I recently put a fresh roof on and may have disturbed the one at the parcel shelf. Thanks for all the info everyone - will let you know the outcome. At least I'm learning more about the electrics.

I'm not getting too excited just yet but think I have located the problem. I pulled that panel of behind the seat Russell and found the earth wire - the attaching screw was loose! Maybe that would explain why the fuel guage was not working also.
Thanks again for all your help!
