Rear Speakers

Hi all I done a rear speaker install an a 89 NA got some pics wanted to know what you guys thought. Put the amp behind the passenger seat. ( I would hate to be the one who has to sit there
If people want I can do a write up on the install.

Did you know, that if you buy a long, skinny amp, you can put it in the tunnels either side of the fuel tank?
Then it doesn't take up any interior space.
As a matter of fact, you can put around 4 of these amps in the space.

These tunnels are why having a subwoofer in the boot works so well, as the bass travels through the tunnels into the interior.

Jmather, any vibrations from mounting directly to that metal cover?

GP, any speakers will run off the internal amp built into your headunit, but will obviously sound much better with a larger external amp.

I didn't really need an amp but I had a nice sound system in my old car, unfortunately it was written off. so instead of selling them all i held on the them and wanted to make use of them... you should see my boot its a little un-practical don't laugh. I wanted to go for a stock look with them like the tweeter at the front. but one problem was I couldn't put the covers on them other wise the glass on the soft top would foul on it.

Nah there wasn't any vibrations its pretty solid there Jeo, hey do you have problems with the soft top?

I've done something similar both in the boot and on my parcel shelf. I only get rattles when I really crank the volume up, and I think I only get them because my screws aren't biting correctly (I didn't cut the holes out very well ).

I've got an 8" sub in the same location. No problems with vibrations but I covered it in sound deadening.



No problem with the window but that could have something to do with me having the plastic zip down one.

You cut the metal

I was a little cut when I picked up my MX-5, because the previous owner had a basic install done, and the installer cut holes into the metal shelf to put 6x9's in. Not a big fan of cutting metal for audio installs - there is almost always another way that won't leave the car permenantly scarred!

Luckilly I was able to find a new trim piece to cover the rear shelf, so you can't tell the holes are there anymore just from looking at it. I still know they are there tho

that bit of metal is just screwed onto the car and is easilly removed and replaced. mine has holes cut in it as well, i've bought a replacement part from the local mx5 wrecker (mx5 centre in melbourne) but haven't got around to fitting it yet.

I had 8" speakers in the shelf of our NB until I put the brown davis in .. perhaps I should put them in the NA.

i have no problem 'permenantly scaring' the car ive fallen in love with her and she (I hope) loves me too. I was tossing up if I should of replaced the blown speakers in the head rest or do this install. well now I dont care what it sounds like from the head rest because the sounds I get from the parcel shelf is fantastic! and if anyone has vibrations or is worried try going down to your local hardware store and invest in a few spring washer. that will hopefuly fasten the bolts a little better and stop them working lose. there is nothing worse that:

1 chasing a bolt that has fallen into some crack some where or under carpet

2 pulling out the trim or whatever to re-do the work you have already done.

Also how do these 8" speakers go sound good? do you guys use them just for bass? Has anyone got any other pics of their installs or alternatives? It'll be good to compare the techniques we have used.
