Painting Rocker Covers

Hi There,
Are there any instructions out there as to how to paint rocker covers like whats the prep etc...


Also does anyone have pictures of there painted covers

I'm not sure what colour to paint it I'm thinking Red atm with the wrinkle finish

I did mine a while back.

Get the cam cover gasket and the glue stuff that goes between the gasket and the cover. The bolts have torqe specs and are done up in a specific order instructions on miata net if your anal.

I kinda regret doing it red now it gets dirty easy and hard to clean stains off it. If I were to do it again I would go black. If I were to do it again again I would rather spend the time to polish it (less weight easy to clean).

If you heat the cam cover then paint it it looks better and paint will dry faster (takes forever to dry and smells bad).

I was going to do mine in crackle-finish red but my cousin got bored one afternoon and used plain VHT heatproof red. It looks ok, but not as good as the way I was going to do it. We did the inlet manifold in satin black while we were at it, I just need to try and do the throttle body now.

Rocker cover was degreased then sprayed, manifold was sandblasted then sprayed

Here is mine, I did a couple of weeks back in black VHT wrinkle paint. Prep was to give it good wipe down with degreaser then three good wipe downs with prepsol (get it from auto paint places) till the rag I was using came away clean. Dried it with a heat gun, taped up any areas I did not want painted such as PCV valve hole and oil filler hole. Did one good coat of paint let it sit for 5 minutes then another coat and then used a heat gun to get the wrinkle finish, I then let it dry for a week inside the house so it was warmer than the garage. Used a razor blade to cut the paint of the raised lettering then finished with a few different grades of wet and dry.

so how long does it take to dry?


and i need a heat gun to get the wrinkle finish? would a hair dryer work?

Hair dryer should be fine, you don't have to use one but you get a better wrinkle finish with one. The can recommends 5 days to let the paint fully cure, but it should be OK after a few hours as long as you don't put pressure on or scuff the painted surface.

I chucked mine into an oven and just cooked it overnight...

Oh you may want to chuck it into the oven and pre-heat it before you paint aswell...

To say nothing about the noise it would have made in the tumble dryer!
