I have a very small turbo on a standard 20 yr old 1.6. AND I use it for track days where it sees full boost for long periods of time. It has 143rwkw on about 11psi, standard i think is about 65rwkw. It has held up so far, even with a few overheating issues along the way. I really think u will get away with a well built standard motor and turbo as long as u tune it properly and keep it cool. Keep looking on ebay for manifolds and turbo's. I just picked up a complete 1.8 turbo setup, minus piping and computer for $750.

Ok, thats good to know lightyear, puts my mind at ease :D

Thanks to russelb of Carco, I am now the proud owner of a Garrett turbo of somekind off a 180sx, for the huge price of....... A case of beer! (thanks!!!)

Also he is looking into getting steampipe manifolds made, and can organize me good deals on downpipe, intake piping etc, Top Bloke he is!

Should be getting some Rods from spool ($550), but sticking with stock pistons.

As for rods, make sure they have ARP bolts as the bolts are the things that break. As for pistons, I highly recommend the US Wisecos from Flyin Miata. They are a different piston to the catalog Wiseco's and worth every cent.

Spool Forged Rods (With ARP Bolts) ordered, Gaskets and Bearings coming when Belfab sends an invoice..

Going with russellb's advice of getting it running NA, then turbo after it runs. should be going NA about a weekend after the parts turn up :D

Well, belfab screwed me around too much (out of stock and unable to order more it seems  )

Anyway, have just ordered new Water Pump, Piston Rings, Gasket Set and Bearings from CNS Auto Parts (though its a hassle to get non standard bearing sizes from them, the price is Excellent!)

Also ordered a blue LED backlighting kit for the dash, not strictly useful for building the engine, but what the hell :P

Turbo part will have to wait, as the missus lost her job this week, and we are moving house too  :(

Gaskets, water pump and rings arrived yesterday, and also dropped off the rods to get the small ends bored out to fit the piston pins.

Also left the the head to get skimmed, cause i kind of mistreated it a little (put a score in it when cleaning carbon out of the combustion chamber, it falling over while i was doing same..)

Should be building it this weekend! Yay!

Take lots of photos !
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

As Dave said, take lots of photos. Also, dont rush it, because otherwise you might skip something by accident. Hell thats why when I owned that car, rebuilding the engine and getting it turboed took 3 months to the day.....(mind you there was a 2 week workshop shutdown for christmas etc)

Well, Got most of it built on the weekend, but broke a bolt holding a cam bearing cap on, so we pretty much stopped with the head on, waiting to bolt the cams down.

Russellb is sourcing me a bolt though so should be finishing the motor soon :D

Details and pictures to come soon (when i get internet back at home :? )

As soon as Internode gives me my new connection, I shall spam this thread with many pics, including the long awaited photos of the ghetto way of heating pistons so the pins fit (its very dodgy  )
