Does anyone know what the effect of shifting the contact patch out like this will have on wheel bearings?

I would have thought that it would have changed the the load to bearing relationship, but I am pretty mechanically challenged!!

At the other extreme it is also changing the ratio of track to wheelbase, would this effect handling?

Any thoughts?

Great looking wheels, by the way, can never understand why Performance won't produce a 25.-40 et range there would have to be a market for them,Honda's Nissans, lancers etc.

Everything changes and everything pretty much goes out the window. Expect it to be an unknown kettle of fish. Guaranteed extra tyre wear.

From a very elementary point of view, it's not necessarily the contact patch change that affects the hubs, but the offset you are now sitting at. The load of the car is now positioned further away from the hubs and mechanically will create more torque around the hub as the same weight is now applied further out. I think green_comet said that once he had low offset wheels bump steer increased for a similar reason as described above.

Also making your wheelbase shorter in ratio to your track width will effectively make your car grippier and very twitchy when sliding. It will have the tendancy to spin rather than slide. This is why cars like MX5es have never been "good" as drift cars because of the relatively short wheelbase. Cars like the 200SX and AE86 are good starting drift cars because of the relatively long wheelbase allowing easier adjustment of the slide.

Take everything I've said with a grain of salt because there are millions of other variables that affect these things, and until you're splitting tenths of a second at a track this isn't really too big a deal.

Good luck. Make sure you take lots of photos to share your project. Be keen to see your progress.

Let just hope you don't get defected though - Has anyone followed up on the legalities of fitting 8"s on an MX-5? If they're legal, I'll consider fitting them. They just look hot!

Almost certain they aren't legal across all states.

Anyone know if they are engineer-able?

8 +0 will look really stupid if the car isnt slammed into the weeds. You need the camber from slamming the rear to get them to tuck in the guards, and it just looks wrong if you don't get the heights right

Thats why I've never bothered to finish getting my SSR's on my car, even though I have the Stance GR+ coilovers that will pretty much put the chassis rails on the road and I probably wouldnt have to lower it much more from where it sits atm, It would just be asking for unwanted attention on the street

Adam, If your not going to put those tough wheels on and slam it then whats the point in having them? Thats like dating jennifer hawkins and not molesting her... :(
