Preview for the Iceberg Run

A suggestion if i may - the road from Robertson -> Jamberoo Valley -> Kiama is brilliant. However it would be a shortern the overall distance and provide more corners/km if you instead went Robertson -> Kangaroo Valley -> Mount Camberwarra -> Nowra, thus avoiding more of the Hwy which can be very busy on weekends, and throwing in an extra climb and descent as well. Most people would return via the freeway also, so less back-tracking along roads already travelled.

Stop suggestions? Three Creeks Cafe in Robertson is great, right opposite the pub on the main street. Parking in front and on the street. There's a new cafe in Burrawang which is very good, though maybe a little too gourmet for some. Avoid Robbo pies like the plague. The Blind Toucan Cafe in Kangaroo Valley is very good, they do decent t/a or eat in coffee and breakkie food, and there is ample offstreet parking on either side. Mt Camberrwarra lookout worth a stop if you go that way also.

Oh bugger, It is indeed Mothers' Day... I think still a go-er anyway...

Just to clarify, this is not the REAL iceberg "freeze your *** off" middle of winter run, but merely a drive to find the best route to take for the future, so don't feel bad if you can't make it as this is just an informal preview to find the best route.

I'm planning to organise the proper REALLY COLD Iceberg run, for some time in July (probably the weekend after the Healey Club's Brass Monkey), with a breakfast destination in mind near the coast in the sun.

Anyhow, Heathcote Maccas carpark at 6am anyone?

Well, on a rainy cold mothers' day morning, only myself and Keith (Malibu Gold NA) were at Maccas before 6.30.

After umm-ing and arrr-ing about whether to bother, we ended up heading off, without roofs, down the freeway. The original plan was to go via the National Park, but there was little incentive in the wet and cold, so we took the freeway to Albion Park, then the Illawarra Hwy to Robertson.

Good news is the Ilawara Hwy has just been completely resurfaced!

From Robertson, took a slight back road to Kangaroo Valley, then on to Nowra.

All the road is good, and there are plenty of tight bits to keep people entertained, but at the end of the run, we couldn't find any large-ish cafe nearby...

I think Huskison is a bit far, and there's not much in Nowra that I know of... Any suggestions? CoffeeBoss?

As it was, we headed to Gerringong to a small cafe on the hilltop, but it's not really big enough for more than a half dozen people, so is probably no suitable for the future Iceberg.

That slight back road out of Robertson is my 'street'. Popular route with bikes on the weekend. Here i am taking my old crew along there:



I love the descent down into Kangaroo Valley from Fitzroy Falls nearly as much as Macquarie Pass. At 7am in the morning, bit of fog...brilliant.

Well, it depends upon your ETA at Robertson, considering you will be going through the Nasho. Normally an early departure from Loftus, via the Nasho puts you in Robertson around lunch time, which means you eat in Robertson or Burrawang, or down in Kangaroo Valley. To be honest, there's no single place that springs to mind that supports large groups. The options that i can see are:

1. Burrawang Pub + Cafe - they are adjacent to each other on Hoddle Street, both serve excellent food, but both usually quite packed out on weekends. Frequented by other enthusiasts as well!




2. Lunch in Kangaroo Valley - you could descend on the township there for lunch, there are quite a few cafes and the pub, all very close together. Plenty of parking next to the pub and nursery.



3. Lunch In Berri - Proceed through Kangaroo Valley township, turn right (or go the longer way over Mt Camberrwarra and double back down the Princes Hwy) and finish in Berri. Again, lots of little cafes dotted along the main street (The Emporium is quite good), parking can be quite scattered on weekends though.

As a rule of thumb, it's likely to be coldest up on the escarpment (Robertson/Burrawang), cool in the valley, warmer at Berri which is on the coast. For my money, Kangaroo Valley is probably the best option logistically (easiest place to park), plenty of eating options all close together so you can say "meet back here in an hour", and gives people a few different options for heading home (via Higlands/M5, via Jamberoo or Maq Pass/Princes Hwy, via Berri/Princes Hwy or via Mt Camberwarra (good lookout!)/Princes Hwy).
