Bluey - My Second MX5

Postby stilletto_rebel » Sat May 02, 2009 8:55 am

My first MX5 was The Old Girl, an '89 NA 1.6 that I had converted to LPG not long after acquiring her. Original thread here: http://mx5cartalk.com/phpBB-3.0.2/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=33973

Unfortunately she succumbed to short-nose crank failure at the end of January, and it was decided that it was just uneconomical to fix her, so the same day I bought Bluey:

Bluey is another late '89 1.6 short-nose crank, except that she had just 69,000 miles on her when I acquired her. She also came complete with a thick file of paperwork documenting every service and MOT she has had. The paperwork even included the original bill of sale from the dealer!

The Mk.II (NB) alloys came with her, as did a K&N filter and noisy dual exhaust. I transferred a number of things from the Old Girl onto Bluey, including:

audio head unit,
Momo steering wheel,
soft top (for the rear glass screen),
Mk.II seats,
'Eunos' door cards,
Racing radiator,
Clear indicators and reflectors,
Powder-coated brake calipers,
and today I installed a boot release mechanism.

Last weekend I had viper stripes added:

I've been stripping the Old Girl of saleable parts and have so far clear approx £1,500!! Much more than she was worth as a whole. I'll be sad to let Bluey go when my visa is approved and leave the UK for better shores.

Just for curiosities sake, how much are old NAs in the UK? 500-1000 pounds?

5s are rather cheap over in the UK.

Depending on where you are heading to you may be able to take Bluey with you??

PS I too had a Mariner Blue, between Malibu Golds. Not that many on the roads over here.

PPS, I'm liking the viper stripes. Looks a wee bit different from the normal stripes down the middle.

Are you still on the path to Oz stiletto_rebel?

Bluey looks like it's been very well taken care of... I can see how hard it would be to let it go...
These things just grab on to your heart and don't let go...

PS is that a Yellow NB beside bluey in the parking lot?? UK MX5 meet?

Prices are anywhere from a couple of hundred for a ratty one to £4k for a pristine mid-90's NA. That's why I've been stripping the Old Girl as she worth three or more times her value in parts.

I am! Should hopefully be in Melbourne by December at the latest.

Not a meet, was just around a friend's. It's an NB 'California' model. A limited edition afaik.

Noticed that you live at Stubbly on the Minge. Isn't that a fishing town?

Very nice SR - always liked the Mariner Blue - the NB8A wheels really suit it too. Saw my first one in Greenwich (not Sydney's North Shore). I imagine it will be hard to leave 'Blue' behind, especially being a low mileage example. Sounds like things are on track for Oz - good to hear. True Blue indeed... :D
