Brake pads

Alright time for some new pads.

What's good, what's bad?

NB8A- stock engine- daily driving.

qfm a1rm - $191 front and rear last time I purchased them. they seem great on rotors and work from cold just fine. and are also pretty good on track with temp rating of 0-780 degrees c. not much dust and make no noise at all. you can get them from gsl rally sport or try google qfm - queensland friction materials.

I've got a half used set of Bendix ultimates you can have for free phil.

Great street pad, I just don't need them as I've got track pads in there ATM.

At the risk of sounding like Mr Morlock... OEM.

They don't overheat after 6 laps of a track. They don't create too much dust. They are good on rotors and work great from cold.

If they are even remotely similarly priced, I'd go OEM. People dismiss them automatically - they shouldn't.

Having said that; I got a quote for almost $500 for replacement OEM pads for my NB8B where race pads for the NA8 are $310... Bugger.

I'm running TRW pads at the moment, after bedding in (get them very hot) they are a really good pad from cold. ABS shops sell them, the last set were under $100 for the front (NA6). I drive on the street and track with these pads.

I had TWR Lucas pads on my NA6 and found that after 6 laps they were rooooooooted.

They stayed rooted after the track day too, for about a week (300kms).

I've had no issues at all with them. I did get them VERY hot when bedding them in, mate who took out the Winton championship runs them also. Could be they have changed compounds?

I bought mine in Jan 2006; so it's quite possible they've improved since. I really found them lacking a few times though.

as boags said the akebono oem pads are quite good from all reports. they are a ceramic based pad i think, similar to the carbotech pads from the states. if you do go the oem route make sure to specify actual oem not factory approved.

Good move, ultimates are dusty but "the best pad I have used in my life" and being free if you don't like them, ask for a refund .

What he said. The "Mazda approved" ones are pov spec Bendix pads in a Mazda box and best to be avoided.

To be honest I have no idea when the brake pads were changed.

But the front are "firepower" and I'm not exactly sure if they are good, probably Bendix equivalant.

The rear haven't been changed I do not think, and I could be stock Akebono? Does anyone know what stock mx5 akebono pads look like do they have any markings/logos/numbers?

The NB8B ones have a light blue coloured backing plate.
