Cracked or broken egine mounts 99 NB

Postby toymx5 » Fri Apr 24, 2009 2:51 pm

Just wondering if it is a common problem to have a crecked or broken engine mount on a 99 NB that's only done 110,000 k's ?

Common, if you've been jumping buses Evil Kenievel style.

Not really.

I have spilled a lot of engin oil and break fluid all over the driver's side engine mount (especially when removing oil filter the residual oil drips onto the engine mount). I hear that makes the rubber perish faster than normal.

My shifter moves about a bit at idle.

But its all going to be fixed soon hehehe

I think it's more common than most people think talking to MX5 Mania and reading miatanet. Most wouldn't know they were cracked without having a good look. Mine were cracked at around that distance, but you'd sort of expect that with the extra power/torque that's been applied to them.

I agree Gary, the MX-5 motors move quite a bit when revved so over time it must effect the mounts. I can remember seeing a brace advertized once, I think it was a genuine Mazdaspeed part that kept the engine from tilting when revved, I must try to find one to put on when I replace the mount.

So MX5es do naturally twist abit when given a little gas?
I went and helped a friend check out a TT Soarer once... gave it a rev while standing still and the engine didn't budge a mil...

Is that an engine torque damper you're talking about there toymx5?
Lots of Japanese aftermarket parts companies make them so tracking one down shouldn't be too difficult...

What Garry said - far more common than some would lead you to believe expecially the passenger side in NBs.....

Less likely to break the engine mounts?

PUR157 - No it wasn't a damper, purley a brace to stop the motor twisting over when revved hard.

ANZTieN - Engine braces are mainly for race cars and their purpose is to stop things that are attached to the motor flexing and breaking (i.e. metal fatigue) things like mounts and exhausts. Also protects the gearbox casings and stops missed gear changes.

Jeo - touche !

I've noticed if I free rev the engine, I can feel the engine move whilst seated in the cabin....

Exactly Szeman, that how I first noticed it, you actually feel the engine move when revved. My mechanic hasn't actually seen the car yet but from talking to him he suspects one of the mounts is either cracked or broken. I'll let you know how I go with it. I'm seriously thinking of fitting an engine brace though, I don't like feeling the engine move like that !

If you need new mounts then get the SE ones. They are a bit stiffer than stock but not stiff enough that you'll notice any extra NVH.
