yeh definately not a car that'll take abuse. hard launches, clutch drops & flatshifting are a no no. not really a good idea to go crazy with power mods either. but treat them nice & they'll do the job. for serious motorsport though they really should have a gearbox & transfer oil cooler put on. as bit of a comparison a fair few AWD cars from the early 90's had weak drivetrains.
the TX3 came 2nd outright & 1st in it's class back in the 91 Bathurst. Dick Johnson also punted one extremely quickly in Targa Tasmania before blowing up the engines (rumour has it on 25psi boost).

I've recently developed a hard on at the idea of a Familia GTR with a ST205 driveline conversion, I know of a fairly cheap GTR that was for sale recently ($6000 ono) but I can't find enough info on how difficult and how expensive the driveline conversion is. There are a few guys that have done it but they seem a bit secretive about it all.
Awesome little cars, if only Mazda could build a strong enough gearbox. Nice big ball bearing turbo and decent injectors from the factory, not much required beyond a full exhaust, intercooler upgrade and some more boost to make them seriously quick little machines

The conversion kit comes from MazForm in New Zealand & costs about the price of two average priced used GTX gearboxes. The kit comes with everything needed to fit, adaptor plates, shift cables, clutch cylinders etc etc. All that needs to be sourced additionally is the Celica ST205 ideally or the ST185 gearbox/rear diff.
The Celica GT4 drivetrain is the most logical conversion since the Mazda speedo cable fits right in with no mods & the Mazda driveshafts happen to have the same number of splines so they fit right in as well.
More details of the kit found on fordlaser.com & the NZ Familia forums.

Benefits of using the turbo bottom end? I take it they were built stronger to handle boost?
I owned(for 3 months) an imported Familar GT sedan in NZ before I jumped ship, I was warned not to increase boost or you will start breaking bits, I always thought they ment engine bits, I take it they were actually talking about the gearbox/drive train?

Yeh, as far as a B6T/BPT/BPD conversion into an MX-5 goes, the only parts that are of benefit are the rods/pistons/injectors. The turbo manifold & ECU can't be used.
The Familia engines had lower compression for more boost, & can take quite a hike in power increase. Running 18psi on a BPD isn't all that hard. But the drivetrain won't like it. A mildly modded GTR has quite a good bit of power anyway, I don't see any reason to need anymore personally but some people will always chase more power.

on the Familia.
the MX-5 gearbox can take quite a good amount of power, but like anything treat it badly too much & it'll leave you stranded one day.
