Good Friday has certainly been very good from a project progress perspective.
Today, with the help from one of my employees (TIG welding Guru - because I can't TIG weld ) I completed the exhaust system. It took a bit of effort...and I'm stoked with the result. You may remember from an earlier post that I was using a JDM aftermarket NC rear muffler assembly. It had a 2.5" inlet that split into two 2.5" pipes. However, due to the higher flow requirements of my engine, a 3.0" front section is required. Two 2.5" pipes have about a 39% larger cross-sectional area when compared to a single 3.0" pipe. So I lopped off the 2.5" inlet and massaged a 3.0" to the profile of the 2 x 2.5" junction.
Anyhow, before I got stuck into that I sorted a problem with the standard NC exhaust heat shield. The heat shield is an aluminised fibreglass moulding that had been damaged at some point and had sagged....problem solved....2 x oversized heat rivets.
Since the rear section of exhaust was stainless steel, I continued with the theme and had exhaust flanges laser cut (and machined where necessary).
Will all exhaust systems I make for my vehicles I use the good ol' masking tape to join the various bends and straight sections prior to welding it out....reduces the chances of a stuff-up.

...after many hours this was the end result. This is the rear assembly with the 3.0" inlet and 3-bolt flange fitted.
This is the front section that connects up to the headers. Look Mum no cat!!!
.....fitted to the car. I'm stoked with the result.
I also took the opportunity to fit the Mazdaspeed front bar. It certainly provides a bigger aperture for ambient air to access the radiator.
By this time it was getting late, but I did get to fit the right hand rear footplate for the roll cage.
Can't wait of next weekend to continue with the rollcage.

Yeah, only yesterday was a day of play . Had the in-laws combined 55th birthday's at our place this evening...so was getting organised for it today.
I'm very happy with the exhaust system. Fingers crossed that it scrapes under the Lakeside dba limit.

During the week I made first contact with Phil Laird (the engine management supplier / tuner) to make arrangements for the installation of the Motec M400. It looks like that in mid to late June he will have a gap in his busy schedule to start the installation. This timing is pretty good as the supercharger kit should be available not long after.
A little bit more progress was made today with the removal of the dash and chassis/dash wiring looms. I also removed the remaining section of carpet and firewall lining so that I can get some dry ice and remove the few sections of sound deadener. This all needs to be sorted before the cage gets welded in.
Here are a few piccies showing the removal of said items.
The foot plates for the main hoop fit!!!
...and she is still dirty as!!!

Looking great though I am not really a fan of the little hotdogs at the tips on the exhaust. Are they actually resonators or just a style thing?
Will you be running a full NC dash or just a digital display off the Motec?

Hi Jake, the funny little things on the tips of the exhaust are purely cosmetic...there's no perforations in the inner tube or fibreglass/steelwool packing in between. I won't be running the standard instrument cluster as the tacho runs out at 7,500 rpm...which is too low for this engine. At this stage I won't be running a Motec dash as I have a group of Defi gauges which don't owe me much.
