Strut brace - how to fit? (NB8A)

Postby hks_kansei » Wed Apr 15, 2009 8:57 pm

As some of you may know, I purchased a strut brace off a member here.

I've had a quick look and it appears there's an air conditioner hardline (I presume it's aircon?) on the passenger side that goes right where the brace end thing needs to.

so, can you fit a strut brace to an NB MX5 with aircon?
any pics from others who have?

Simple. Take your aircon out. :D

NOOOOOO

aircon stays!
it's a cold air intake, for the driver!

the only thing I'm thinking is maybe trying to bend the line to make room, but I think it might just kink and block the line, or split it and I'll cop a lungfull of lovely refridgerant gas of death.

Where is the line actual lying across?

If you're completely out of ideas, bring it along to the garage caff and we'll put our collective heads together. And ban Zaclet from touching anything as he'll only taint it with ghetto stench.

Cool. Reminds me, I should get some of my revamped engine bay up on various places too.

What strut brace is it?

I remember when installing a Carbing Strut brace on the nb8a, nothing was in the way.. remove 2 nuts on both side... put strut brace on and screw back on the nuts.

I think one of my hardlines is near the strut top, just gently get the end of the strut brace underneath the hardline and ontop of the mount studs. I can take photos if needed.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I've tried that, but on this one the upright part where the brace bar connects is on the side, and hits the aircon line.

here's a pic of it:

now I presume the end bits go the other way around since the bar doesnt reach when they are like in the photo. (ie: the open end of the C shaped bit faces the guard)

From those pics... isn't the C supposed to be the other way...

You can't really see it in this picture... but you get it?

yeah, it does go the other way.

but when it's the correct way around the upright bit on the passenger side hits the aircon line.

here's a few pics.

Image
overall of engine bay, aircon line not completely visible due to airbox.

Image
the passenger side strut top, shpoing the line and in red, a rough (very rough) drawing of how the brace is supposed to go, you can see where the line hits.

same pic, without shitty drawing.

Now that you mention it, that line was in the way.
However my strut brace had a "lip" to slide under it and cleared the side mount towers.
