It's an interesting question and one that I cannot answer with conviction. I had my car passed through rego thrww years in a row with no spare, but that doesn't mean a lot. I also got it passed NSW enginners and the car was never defected despite being pulled over a few times.

I know it's a defect to replace run-on-flats with normal tyres unless you add a spare, although if you can get an enginner to approve it with regard to teh relevant wheel and tyre size ADR you should be fine.

Don't quote me but I belive the law says that you are free to remove your spare. If you keep it you must however keep it in good condition, pumped up, etc.

I know Trader relocated his spare under the car to free up space. You could try shooting him a pm.
