Worn crank keyway - on a 1.8L!

Add my name to the list of a rare few who've been victims of the worn keyway on a 1.8 engine!

Image

Not only, that the timing belt pulley has been wearing the face of the oil pump so the mechanic wasn't confident in replacing the crank oil seal as it may not hold in place.

So much for trying to keep the car lowish in kilometres (142,000K now) & in good nick. This is going to lower the value a bit..

Don't know. Hope it lasts till 200,000ks then get it rebuilt with another crank. Now to just flippin find out if the BPT crank from a TX3 or GTX is the same spec.

Failure of the 1.8 cranks is a lot more common than most people think, just not quite as common as the 1.6... I really feel for you mate :(

thats actually what the mechanic did. machined a new key in the shape of the worn out area.

That sux Vu.
Do you know if the problem originated from the previous owner/s who's had the key replaced and it was placed the wrong way round?

it might of been the mechanics who did the first timing belt service, they did it early though at about 85,000ks so maybe the waterpump was leaking.

car seemed fine on power when i got it at 130,000ks so i wonder if the prior owner did something just before i bought it. mechanic did say the current waterpump looks new.

Maybe the pulley bolt wasn't replaced and/or properly torqued.

The real problem is that the design of the long nosed crank is almost as bad as the design of the short nosed one. The hub pulley boss on the long nosed version still has 3/4 of its depth not supported either by the key or the crankshaft nose. It just looks totally dodgy.

There's usually extra load on the 1800s too since many more of them carry power steer and A/C.

So far the focus has been on short nosed crank problems but I reckon we'll see more and more of these as the 1800 engines get well beyond their 100,000km service. Mine started to fail at 150,000.

IMO the only thing better about the 1.8 is the bigger bolt is less likely to get fatigued. Thats it.

The problem is that the bolt thread deforms on the first use (that's how it locks) and should be replaced upon removal because it may never properly lock again.
