No front parkers...

It seems my NA8 has no front parkers. From what I can work out, it has aftermarket clear indicators (with an orange bulb) but there doesn't seem to be a second bulb in there for the parkers.

Just looking on the mx5centre web site, they seem similar to this:

the site states "The parker globe fitting is accommodated but not predrilled." Before I pull the indicator off and have a play, is it just a case of drilling a hole for the parker lights?

I do not have an NA but my understanding is that it has a front combination lamp with park bulb and a turn signal bulb. The t/s bulb sits behind an amber sub lense on a standard car but some people remove the lense for fashion and replace the bulb with an amber one- the bulbs have different bases but seem somehow to function. The park bulb should still be in place -as it simply illuminates through the external clear lense. I believe that the park bulb is a 5W glass wedge- a wedge bulb always sits in a bulbholder which in turn is fitted into the aperture on the t/sig housing. Drilling a round hole does not make sense to me- how would the bulbholder be fixed? There are some photo's in this section re removing amber lenses and might help with layout ( you can see the bulb locations) . The car is not roadworthy without the parkers.

That's correct, you need to tap a hole into the lens to fit the parking globe, there is a provision for it.

The aftermarket lenses are junk in terms of quality compared to the Mazda items but yes they are a heck of a lot cheaper!!

The are quite shiny though I'll have to pull them off and have a look at them this weekend. Hopefully all the wiring and bulb carriers are still in place somewhere. The only reason I discovered this is I left my parkers on and flattened my battery (it was a rainy night too) Because there were no front parkers I didn't realise. 6 hours later it's 4 am, it's still raining and I can't start my car. Won't make that mistake again.

hotrod remarked about junk aftermarket and no surprise with that. A lot of the copy products do not even use the right plastics or use regrind. On the other post one of the guys procured another standard set of combo t/sigs though I think he removed the amber lenses ( s/be reversible process) - you might be able to replace the existing units. What a crappy situation to sell lamps which are not legal.

The clear indicators do look clean. If I can modify them to get the parkers working, it'll be cheaper than sourcing replacements. Personally, I'd rather put money towards decent mods, not fancy lights, but this was done by the PO and it does suit the car so I'm happy to keep them. These days with china copies, half the stuff around has been copied by someone who's probably not aware what the actual purpose of the object is. The copy will look similar, but may not do what it's supposed to.

I'll get it sorted, but at first I wasn't even sure where the parkers were suposed to be located. The joys of buying a used car At least most of the suprises were pleasant.

I'd be more worried about why the lights were replaced. Any evidence of a crash?

No evidence of a crash. The young girl I bought it off installed clear front and side indicators, mazspeed gearknob, sunwoofer and other stereo bits so she would look good while cruising with her friend. (and yes, both girls were pleasant on the eyes ). So, more for looks then anything.

Big hole is for the indicator, little one is for the parker. You can see the hole for the parker in this one has been abused a little to get some other sort of bulb in there by the previous owner, but that is basically what the standard one should look like (ignore the lack of orange cover in the 2nd photo, a stock one will still have that)

The wires for both the parker and indicator run through the same plug. So unless the previous owner was trying to make life difficult, your wiring should still be there.

Its only 2 screws to get the whole thing out so it should be a really easy to check.

I finally got a chance to pull the indicators out today. The bulbs are a dual filament set-up, with three wires going in. The three wires are hard wired into the existing plug, so they don't unplug anymore... Plus they only come on as indicators, not parkers so I guess they aren't wired up quite right. I'll have a better look at it in the morning. I might just have to buy a bulb holder for the parker bulb, drill out the hole for it and re-wire it up how I want it. Fun and games.
