Air Filter - Pod or Replace the Foam?

Postby madboy » Mon Feb 09, 2009 10:00 pm

its an NA, no need for a temp sensor, well, BMC pod filter on, i deffinatly need to find some kind of heat shielding, its way way to close to the headers, put my hand on it after a blat up the road, very hot, not good.

After some research about HKS, it got the a*se. Ricebahn didn't have the K&N i wanted so he gave me a good deal on the BMC, largley unknown to me but from what i have read so far, a resonably good filter.

When its time to replace next time, I'll have the time to order a 3A, but needed something now :(

cheers all

Air Filter - Pod or Replace the Foam?

perhaps find a JetCo enclosed pod. inside it's practically identical the the enclosed Simota filter (as used by MX-5 Manias cowl intake & various other peoples DIY versions) but a bit more compact. same manufacturer imo.

dry filter too so no harm done to electronics unlike if you over oil a K&N for example by mistake.

i'll probably spray mine matte black so it'll hardly be noticable to cops.

But am I likely to notice much difference in terms of performance between:

a) Bog standard airbox with regular panel filter
b) Standard airbox + K&N type panel filter
or
c) Pod filter

http://autospeed.com/A_110680/cms/article.html

Reading that article about 3 times certinly helped me understand a bit more about the 5's intake, pod seems to be the way to go, as two of the biggest restrictions are the snorkle and top of the air box,

The next issue is to stop it from sucking hot air straight off the headers/exhaust, this is where all the gains you made by increasing flow are cancled by increasing the intake temp, considering that after you have a pod installed there might only be about 100mm between the exhaust and the pod, finding a decent heat shield is not easy, which is also where all these CAI's that route to above the firewall come in.

Me, i don't want to cut hole in my car so i am now hunting for a way to heat shield my new pod before the heat destroys it.

thats a really good article there...

don't suppose anyone would know off the top of their head the separation between the 4 bolt holes of the adapter between the afm and a pod? i need a new one for a 3a filter which has a smaller neck than my current one. supercheap had one suitable for mazda 323 which looked close, but there was another one really similar with different hole separations.

they should say on the back of the packet what fits which car. IIRC the old 323 and na have the same air flow meter?

Hi doogle,
Do you have a NA6 with a B6? I am sure I still have NA6 AFM Adaptors to suit somewhere.
Let me check and get back to you asap.

couldn't find a packet that said mx5, perhaps i'll just try the 323 adapter and see if it fits by the time i get around to installing it.

mx52nv, not sure what you mean by NA6 with B6, but i have an NA6 :| are you suggesting that it is a custom part? i wouldn't have thought so...

Hi doogle,
NA6CE is the actual designation for the 1989-1993 MX5. B6 was the 1.6 litre engine in it and the BP 1.8 was introduced in the NA8 from approximately 1994 onwards. I wanted to know if you still had the 1.6 B6 AFM as the AFM in the NA8 BP was different from memory.

Still need to find the adaptors though ... maybe it's in that other box over there ...
