Hi, my 1990 roadster only has the lever for the fuel cap, i just bought the later one with boot and fuel release from felow forumite baldas. I've had a quick look this morning and my original has 2 bolts to hold it down whereas the later lever only has 1 bolt and looks a bit wider than the slot in the body to fit. Is there anything else i need to fit these to my car, levers came with the cables, how do you connect it to the boot latch, has anyone swapped them over, any one got any pic's from doing the swap.

I've got one, just doesnt seem to fit in the slot on the transmission tunnel, any suggestions

Got the levers fitted, but where the boot cable connects to the boot mechanism i cant figure it out. Do the later models that have both the levers fitted as standard have a different mechanism.

Here's how I wired up an electronic version on the NB8A.

I've done the opposite, I disconnected my factory boot release so that it's harder for someone to break into the boot.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

They must be different, in the photo above you can see where the rod from the boot lock is clipped into the plastic retainer thingy (which is the same as mine), but there must be a different connector that the cable goes to (mine has the bit that the white/silver part of the cable is slotted into, just no ware for the cables end to connect to). Has any one got any photos of what the nb looks like from the side that every-thing's connected to.

This photo shows the grove where a later model cable release could be attached. I assume you'd need to modify the inside part of the catch to attach the actual cable.

Cheers Okibi, my lock looks the same as yours, i may have to rig something up to attach it to the rod like your one. Not now though the cars at mx5+ getting another engine fitted, thanks for the photos

Here is what the latch looks like from the other side. The cable connects to the loop above the orange bit. As viewed, the cable pulls the level to the right which in turn moves the level and rod (the orange bit) to the right. I'm not sure how different this is to your latch but if you can get the cable to pull on your latch's lever or rod it should work.

Just seen this thread.

I actually did this mod to my NA today! The lock is slightly different for the boot release mechanism, but I was surprised how involved this simple modification was!

I had to dremmel away a chunk of metal from the area where the release levers are fixed inside the cabin, as the dual release lever mount is (obviously) wider than my original petrol release lever. Fixing the new lock and wiring things up was quite straightforward, but then I found the boot wouldn't latch. For some reason the new lock was 'deeper' than the old one and the 'u' hook on the boot lid didn't have enough length to latch. So I added two washers between the boot lid and the 'u' hook, giving it the extra millimeter or so that it required to latch. Then I found that I needed to cut away some of the plastic at the back of the centre console as there wasn't enough play to lift the levers and release the boot or the fuel flap. But now I have a fully-fuctional boot release lever. 8)

Turning the key to the left will also disable the boot release button on the key fob
(at least it does on a NB8B)

Only way to reset it is to unlock the boot with the key.
