NB8A Key Cutting Question

Postby der baron » Mon Mar 23, 2009 8:01 pm

Ladies and Germs,

I only have one key for my 98 NB8A. I am keen to get another one cut, and am looking for a blank.

I am confused though - I was told I cannot use any old key, because there is a chip in my current key...

now my key looks very basic, and I'm not so sure this is right.. Can someone confirm it's OK to just order blanks off ebay or something>

thanks heaps, Alex

there is a current post on General section which talks about keys for your model ( PSSquire) . It underlines the value of a 2nd key. You can buy off e bay but if it is does not function you may lose your money. With things like this I would buy from a local business. A local source will not charge you for a key that does not work.

NB8A Key Cutting Question

I ordered mine from the local Mazda dealer, they sent me to a locksmith they trust, I got it cut then took it back to Mazda and they programmed the chip. They needed a number off the vehicle to program the chip. I also got a normal key cut at the same time so I had one dummy key that could open the car but not start it.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Thanks,

That's not the news I wanted to hear, but it is the situation. So I really need to get a blank from Mazda for $___...

I'll call them now. Thanks again!

you can buy the blank from mazda go to a lock smith and cut it.

Then you can program it yourself following these instructions:

NB8A Key Cutting Question

Postby Amanda » Tue Mar 24, 2009 5:09 pm

I'm buying my NB8A from a Dealer. I had the delivery manager trying to sell me all that crap they do you know paint protection, tint etc She also tried to flog me an alarm system, saying that the MX-5 has no immobiliser. When I said 'I dont believe you are familiar with this car, it does have one' she was most adamant that if there was no remote, no immobiliser!

I decided there was no use arguing with a dopey person! :P

Anwyays, I've learnt a bit in the last few days.. thanks guys :)

Hi Amanda,

My NB8A also came with only one key, I went to one of those shopping centre key cutting places and for $100 they supplied me with a key that not only looked identical to my original but it also worked first time.
All they did was read my existing key and program the new key - took about 30 minutes.

That's when you ask her to put her commission on the line and save a few extra $$$ from your purchase.
