Duj, that was my logic too, hardtop-harder to break in and albeit a day late for me, no slashed roof.
As for the roof being black I quite like it, I think a blue matching hardtop would almost be too much blue, does anyone agree?. I did see a Laguna blue NA8 for sale a while back on one of the car sites, and it had a matching top, sold after a month I think.
I rang insurance today and they said my excess was the standard $500. Considering I just forked that out for the hardtop, I am considering a repair job (it hurts me to say it).
How long does a claim last with insurance before they will no longer honour it, or is that not the case?

That's right - as in: not very hard at all. Just to repeat - my car had the hardtop on. It was broken into in a security patrolled car park along with half a dozen other cars. I didn't have to replace the soft top. I just had to replace the window, door lock, ignition lock, dip stick (which they had forced into the ignition lock), spend the next six months finding pieces of glass, etc.
The hard top is as much a security measure as leaving your windows down and doors unlocked. that won't get your soft top slashed either.
The best thing, as others have said, is to make sure you leave the glove box and console open. Loose change is what most of these scum are after (and they'll happily trash your car for a couple of dollars worth of coins). If they can see you don't have any they'll go to the next car.

Yeah 2k for a roof isnt that high. Ive gone through a few places other thank ebay and second hand and they are all around that mark inc. fitting. And mind you this is without the frame. I guess some people dont like the look of a patch, let alone the reminder of the event everytime they see the patch. Im thinking about claiming my roof through double aami, good to know how you go.!

Be aware that there are some good second hand roof's around. I got mine from the Mx5 factory, It was off a 2001 NB8B iirc. For soft top, frame, rainrail, fitting and detailing it was $600.
If you look around a bit you might get a great deal like i did.
Here is my old roof, was not slashed but just badly aged.
This is the new roof, it was used for 10,000 km's.
Good luck.
Cheyne.
