bensale wrote:Why not just drill some holes in your stock air box? I made three one inch holes in the cold side of mine. Its given me the desired sound, similar to a CAI but no where near as loud or angry all the time like the mania one, but still nice and throaty when you want it to be.
I also drilled a few more holes, if you open up about 5-6 one inch holes it sounds about as loud and angry as the mania one, I just left it at three as I think that is a nice medium ground.
Best of all its free and is in my opinion a much better match to a stock exhaust as the mania firewall intake sound overpowers the standard exhaust note. You could also try taking the snorkel off the back of the air box, that gives a bit of growl at WOT with no other mods, but when you do that you pick up hotter air so I put it back on.
Are the holes under the filter?

Yep, on the "dirty" side of the filter ....
If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits eighty-eight miles per hour ... you're gonna see some serious s**t.

Thats different, if its under its probably not a good idea..
Cheyne made me aware of the new mx5's 'factory firewall intake'.. Interesting huh..
What i would like to maybe gather from this thread in terms of improving intake sound is can the firewall intake be altered to whistle? This i think would be a great addition, not as a conventional mouthpiece whistle type sound but the subtle and slight pitchy intake sound you get with turbo's. Would be interesting dont you think?

They make N/A bov's that attach to your exhaust, if you want it to whistle, buy that

Yeah that was definitely the standard NA8 AFM - that pic is of my old engine.
Sounds like you've already started modding but thought I'd stick in another vote for the Mania CAI. If I ever get another NA it would be the first mod I'd do (just like it was on my last NA).

I did it my self, all you need is a 3 inch holesaw piece, a cool drink and some food
Took me roughly 20 mins.

Or in my case a 76mm holesaw which i think has been outlawed making it very hard to come by when your 'borrowing'. In that case you need a drill and a lot of patience!! See my thread for fitting instructions.

Also has anyone got any pics of the underside of their intake box with the holes drilled? wondering where is the best place for these

I think he's just mistaken and meant over. If you drill under the filter on the dirty side of the intake there are no issues. It's only if you drill into the clean side that there would be an issue as you'd be sucking in unfiltered air.
I don't have any pictures as it'd be impossible to show the holes without pulling the intake box out. Picture the box, on the right hand wall going along the bottom are 3x small one inch holes. I did it on the right side as i figured this was the point furthest away from the exhaust and therefore the coolest spot to get air from. If you're willing to wait a few days I may find some time to pull the box out and take a picture.
