This is the female mould taken from the original roof. Today i will brace it with some steel and fibreglass that onto the outside after i trim it up. Then it will be ready to do the layup of carbon fibre. The peeling bits you see is p.v.a. It's a mould release that washes of in water.

Wait till i build the first one, see how good it turns out. But it shouldn't be a problem. I am build ing it for motorsport use. But i can build the moulds for the interior for road use.

It will be exactly the same as the original hardtrop so it will fit. But if you look inside the factory hardtop the shape is made to suit the rubber moulds and for the brackets that go onto the seatbelt towers.

So what i will end up with is a hardtop that won't have the rubber seals and brackets. I am making custom alloy brackets that will be bonded to the top and bolted to the car. Only problem i can see is the gap around the side windows may need a rubber or extra c.f as it is pretty big without the factory rubber mould in place.

I forgot how much of a mess fibreglassing makes.

I layed up 2 layers of c.f today and put the 1mm foam in the middle of the roof for more support and to stop it from being too drummy. I think this is about as light as you can make it with having enough strenght to keep it strong. I used a black dye in it so it's not so see thru. That's why the white foam looks a little dirty.
I will strip it out tuesday after work and see how it turned out.

It didn't turn out real good as i used a heat gun to help it dry a bit faster, to do it quickly. The heat made the epoxy very thin and it ran away from all the edges. I will fill them up and see what it looks like. Most likely i will make another one with 3 layers, as it might be a bit too thin. And i won't be using any black pigment as it bleeds thru in places. Still looks very cool. If i can't fix it, it would make a great cover for an existing hardtop.
