cheap audio

need some advice here. getting tired of the poor quality of the stock audio setup. Not looking for anything flash, just an upgrade frm the standard speakers.. will just replacing them be worth the trouble? what will say, $150, get me in terms of quality?

edit: oh i have an aftermarket head unit (nothin fancy, prob like any $80-100 one from supercheap), everything else is standard

I picked up a set of Sony 6" two-ways which fit into the stock holes and even had the right triangle-pattern screw holes...

$49 at JB Hifi ...

Take in your old speaker as a template - makes it easier to line up the holes

Dude, I have some 8" pioneers you can have for $80 if you think they're suitable.

Perhaps you should drop around some time (Winthrop).

I have bought 3 different head units over the last 12 months all from Cash converters, the last 2 were about $120 each. It might give you an idea of what you can get if you hunt around.

I'd rather Alpine than a supercrap brand and they play MP3/ipod etc.

I'm pretty happy with them, but then again, i drive with the roof down a lot and listen mostly to the ABC

But when i have a CD in and the roof up, they are about 100% better than the stockies....

I'd LIKE a decent bit of bass, but in this little car and this little head-unit (Sony Old-School Cassette / CD Changer), it will do for the moment...

New speakers and an amp will make a bigger difference than speakers alone. Thats initially what I did with my car. I got a small 2 channel Pioneer amp that fits in one of the tunnels beside the fuel tank so I didn't loose any boot space.

I would go the Jaycar kevlar splits Juffa linked. They are some of the best speakers I have heard for the money...

With your budget i'd be looking at jaycar splits and if you can stretch it just a little, a small amp to in with them. You will see an improvement with just the speakers, but you'll see much more with even a 50w cop behind them.

so ive decided id go with the 6.5's Precision Response splits (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.as ... BCATID=602). just going to change the speakers for now then an amp some time later

but when I held the stock speaker to it, the holes don't line up its too big. what did you guys do to fit it? or can someone recommend a quality pair of splits (~$150) that fit the existing holes? this is my first time working on audio, so the simpler the better
