Possible Root Cause,
A woman (it had to be) ran over a mattress and decided to keep going anyway. The mattress got caught in the car's under belly and finally whipped around enough to put a tear in the gas tank. Leaking gas She still managed to drive the car for 30 more miles decently, with a 60lb tangle wrapped around the driveshaft. The subsequent lack of fuel is what finally brought her vehicle to its knees.
After having her car towed to her dealer's garage, She complained that the vehicle had a "shimmy" when driving it at high speeds.
The pix are what the dealership found..............

What an idiot. The springs should have sparked and ignited the fuel tank - and thus make the world a better place.

A similar thing happened in Sydney a month or so ago:
The 34-year-old Bondi woman ran into trouble when she drove the Mini Cooper over a mattress in Parramatta shortly after 5pm, but continued on not realising something was wrong.
And on the topic of people driving over something and not stopping to see if all is OK... I read last week of someone in NYC driving their van across the city not realising they were dragging a (by now very deceased) person along underneath... I won't link to that story as the details are gruesome.

I was a labourer in a forestry gang when the ganger drove our Landcruiser over a fence cut for firefighting.
"uh Dave, I think you've hooked onto the fence there"
"Buggar that, it's knock off time"
"uh, Dave ..."
"Shut up, we're going back to the depot"
"uh Dave, I think you still hooked up ..."
"Oh sh*t, we're losing power ..."
He rolled up about 200m of fencing - top barbed, second strand HT, 3 strands of netting holders, the rabbit mesh and two star pickets as well - around the tailshaft. Destroyed the universals and the gear and diff seals. ...
...but best of all we got 3 hours overtime for missing knock-off time. Clever guy was Dave!
