exactly.

look at it like this, if you dont have them, there is a slight risk of the wheel coming off/stud breaking.

if you have them, there is much less risk, with no downside apart from an extra 10grams of plastic.




it's like a vaccine, chances are you arent likely to catch some of the diseases they vaccinate against, but you may as well get it since then you dont need to worry at all.

My experience with this topic aligns with exactly what Matty and GreenComet are saying.

I have RPF1's with McGaurd lug nuts. Hubcentric rings are suggested, but not required. Like 949 Racing, Goodwin Racing also sell wheels for the MX5 which don't seat against the hub. Brian and Emilio both will tell you that hub centric rings are handy, but not needed. Spinning Wheel in Zetland have also confirmed this for me.

I've covered about 50'000kms with these wheels and lug nuts together on the car including plenty of track days. No issues.

does anyone know what OD size the 949 54.1's go to? it just says Toyota...I had two 54.1 to 73.1's put into my front wheels today, they seem to have sorted my nasty shaking at 110km/h, they could only find 2 in their tin of rings so i am looking for some more, any suggestions?

If your wheels have a taper and seat like the standard ones (or are complimentary if they are aftermarket)you are home and hosed.I find it difficult to believe that anyone could seriously suggest that a PLASTIC hub ring could be a load carrying part of the suspension, with the right nuts and taper it just sets up fitment!!!

sorry to bring up an old thread.

ok, I'm going to be buying hub rings (I don't care what people's opinions on them are, I'm buying a set)

anyway, what's the MX5 stock bore? (for NB8A)

I measured the spare and got 54mm, just want to confirm this before buying.


also, my new wheels seem to have a step in the bore, it's 63mm at the back for about 15mm in, then a step to 62mm.

I presume then i'll need a 54/63 ring?

I'm so glad you you're getting the centering rings, I can't believe the uninformed and irresponsible comments buy some people on this forum. I have a brand new set of Momo wheels which have the exact same angled lug nuts as the factory wheels and each wheel has a massive sticker on them warning that it is dangerous to mount the wheels without the use of the proper centering ring.

Are you going on the GOR run next week, if so look forward to catching up again !

My mate at Tempe Tyres would NEVER fit a new alloy wheel to a car without using a hub ring, and he has virtually every size available.

He reckons that you can certainly get away without using it, but he has found after many years of experience, that it is always safer to use them.
He reckons that they have had a number of out-of-balance problems with aftermarket wheels that were not fitted with the hub rings.

I do agree that a plastic ring can't take all the forces of a wheel going around a corner with a slick tyre on it, but it does help to make sure the wheel doesn't move around on the studs.
If one of the wheel nuts is just a little loose, you run the risk of the wheel being able to move around, and once it starts moving, then it will place huge stresses on the nuts.
