I made sure when I got my RE001's that they were made in Japan. They have plenty of grip, and perform very well. Ill see in the coming months if they start to fall apart like the ones in the pics. I think you guys should complain about the Australian made ones..

I spoke with Tien the other night regarding the RE001.

I have a set of Japanese made RE001 in 195/50/15 and have not had any issues.

I've done one trackday on them and one motorkhana, and the guy I bought the tyres off had done a few trackdays with them too, no chunks missing, no warped tread, not any damage, And I would expect my fat car (1300kg) to be much harder on tyres than an MX5 would!

here's what my RE001 look like
Image Image Image

track pressures were 36psi hot all round
motorkhana was 36psi cold front, 45psi cold rear.

Charlie, I just swapped two of my PP2 (15 inch) for the Jap spec adrenaline. I am stil running 2 x PP2 on the back until they wear down, (shouldn't be long) but I have to say I am converted.
The Adrenalines seem like they have a greater grip level, and also feel like they are a more comfortable ride, perhaps as I don't have to use quite as high a pressure in them due to the stiffer sidewall.
I haven't tracked the car since I swapped tyres, but on a couple of spirited runs they feel liek they are a whole generation better than the PP2.
I got mine for about $140 a tyre fitted and balanced.
Tyres were fitted about 2 weeks before I got a chance to get a custom wheel alignment done, so the only change in the car was the tyres.

(BTW thanks for the great info you posted on wheel alignments!)

Cheers
Chris

I just remembered that I had a good chat with the manager down at my local bridgestone before I bought the tyres. He firmly recommended that I go with the Jap spec tyre over the Aus spec for a few reasons.
1 : Slightly softer compund rubber
2 : Jap spec apparently has another 1 or 2 mm of tread depth when compared to the Aus spec.
3: Although he did not say it outright he intimated that the Jap tyre was of a better build quality.

Cheers

I'm surprised he gave you the option. I'm talking good surprise though.

I've noticed this happening on my Aus spec adrenalins now. I swapped them off after the last track meet and noticed the same chunking.

As a refresher, I pretty much use these tyres only for the track at the moment (with maybe 1-2 weeks road driving afterwards) whilst I try and wear out my rubber on my spare rims before I get some sort of semi.

I still haven't noticed the grip problem, but I'm comparing my bridgestones to my old Kuhmo Ecsta's, so perhaps it's not as good a gauge as comparing Aus spec to Jap spec. Either way, I'm still convinced the Aus specs work well enough.

That's interesting.

I have 2 sets of 16in RE001's at home, I didn't realise they may be different until now. One set is Aussie spec and one set made in Japan. The only difference being the Aussie tyres have colouring chalk lines on the thread. I measured the tread and they are similar as far as I can see (JDM ones look to be 0.5mm more in in the middle). No idea regarding compounds though.

Charlie Brown wrote:Bridgestone RE001 - $252 - mixed information from other forums on this tyre. Some say it's the antz pantz, others say its noisy but most would buy it again. It's locally made and some think that's a negative.

Bridgestone RE050A - $333 - a bit to exxxy for me.
I know you only want to hear about MX-5 experiences but I thought I'd throw this out there anyway.

Most of the Libertys come with RE050As in 215/45R17 so I'm pretty well versed on this tyre. The guys that have gone to the RE001s state that they're softer riding and almost as grippy. The main difference is the sidewall though. The RE050As have fantasticly firm sidewalls which put them high above the RE001s in terms of feedback and turn in.

Whether they're worth the extra spend depends on what you like in your tyre.

As NMX516/8 has finally used "The Force" and come over to Team SP, I have had NMX518 in my hands for two days. (that sounds wrong in a 99MXV kind of way) That being said I doubt I'll ever get the keys to NMX516

Anyway, whilst returning from the land of BrisVegas last night, I happened upon a very (very very) wet stretch of road. Apart from the fact MX516/8 had made it quite clear not to bend NMX518, especially on a bit of road I have dríven 7 trazillion miles on, I was left far from impressed with the RE001's, quite clearly they were letting it be well known they wanted to kill me.

I had also checked the RE001's before leaving BrisVegas, and had a very good idea of how much tread depth there was. I have recently replaced my dead PP2's with a brand new set, and after last night I feel extremely vindicated with my decision.

Today I drove NMX518 back into BrisVegas and, although nowhere near as noisy as a set of Dunlop FM-901's (sniff, yep they're an historic tyre now, but flowering awesome), not a pinch on how quiet a set of PP2's are.

PP2's FTW

Oh, and I got 40K out of the PP2's too
Went for a drive and there were slow cars everywhere, why are NC's so common . . . must be NC = Normally Cardiganed.

How the hell did you manage that???? I'll be lucky to get 30k km out of this set, thats going to be about 5K km better than the last set. I'm seem to average about 25K out of a set of tyres. The poxy stock Turanzas only lasted 20k km though.

Wow, I managed 25k out of both sets of turanzas, plus a dozen or so track days. The A539's lasted 65K and the two sets of CDrives lasted nearly 50k each.

In comparison I expect the RE001's to last less than 30k (they're on 20ish now)

We had the PP2s fitted @ 36000km, now got 41000km on the clock and there's at least another two track days in 'em! I should be able to beat my previous best of 13000km with the PP2s and have 'em dead with under 10000km  Great tyres though! A fair bit better than the OEM Toyos were and way better than the RT615s!

TheMissus had Re001s fitted to the NA the other day and I gotta say, I like 'em! (185/60/14 - Aussie, no Jap ones apparently)
Sing that song, puff all night long.......
