WHICH CLUTCH

On my SP, I use the Exedy Sports Tuff Clutch kit. As it's for road use only. The pedal feel is the same as Mazda OEM, but with better engagement and tougher.

But according to Mania, if you'd track the car mostly, they'd recommend Exedy Racing Clutch.

Hammer,
I've been very happy with one of these below, but I purchased it when $1au = 95c us. With the 13.5lb flywheel and ACT pressure plate, It's not hard on the leg in stop start traffic and the wife can drive with smooth take offs (

and really gets going). ACT clutches are excellent quality. And a steel flywheel, no gear rings to come loose!

Did flyin miata give you an ACT prolite flywheel with the ACT clutch pack? Looks like this with lots of speed holes...

I'm just wondering because I'm thinking of installing one; what's it like to drive is it more noizy or difficult when daily driving?

Is the 'ring gear' the black pointy bits around the edge of the flywheel did you angle grind them off, how much weight did you save?

If you grind the pointy bits off you may have difficulty starting the car :mrgreen:

Speed holes is like drilling holes in your car keys or in your fire extinguisher bracket or drilling out the front bumper, and side intrusion bars or buying wheels that have more holes than you need to bolt them to your car. The more holes you have the less weight you have, thus you can travel faster; hence I refer to them as 'speed holes'.

Oh so what is the "gear ring" can some one point it out so I can take out my angle grinder??

Has anyone stripped the pink paint off to save weight?

I have lots of used brake fluid im just itching to pour it on something...

The Exedy Sports Tuff is a good one. It's what I have in mine but when I went to the Clutch & Brake place to enquire about a new clutch kit the guy at the counter who has the same car as mine recommended (& uses one in his as well) a heavy duty organic clutch from Xtreme Clutches (Australian Clutch Services). Just as good if not better then the Exedy but also lower in price. Aussie made too & they can also do custom spec clutches if you want

I think that’s the 10.35lb version, I had the 13.45lb type (19.18lb 8.7kg std), no extra noise, easy to take off, good idle and it makes the engine rev very easily. The 10.35lb type would suit a NA car and their all one piece no ring gear to come loose.

Hey just turboed my NB8B has 170rwkW im running a 5 puck exedy clutch. Handle the power well so far very easy on the pedal too. Was worried inially that might be on/off type but in stop start traffic its all good

As I mentioned before, I have tried every type of Exedy clutch available and it just so happens that the HDCB is the one in MX52NV now. I fitted it in early 2008 and it is barely gripping now.

It might be fine for a normally aspirated MX5 and normal driving.

However, take it from someone who has spent all the money, labour & time to try all the Exedy products for the MX5 and have found them all to have fallen short in high horsepower MX5 applications. Granted I have decent horsepower (235rwhp street tune) but I am also very gentle with the car and I always look after my drivetrain when driving.

Ask BOYRCR (340+rwhp) if he has any problems with his OS Giken twin plate since I supplied it to him almost a year ago. Think he has broken 2 or 3 gearboxes though ... :lol:
