How to change AC compressor oil?

Postby Calmman » Thu Feb 05, 2009 8:26 pm

Hi everyone
Got a question and hope you may help.
I am planning to convert my R12 system to R134a and would like to ask a few questions.

1. How to change compressor oil? Does it have a drain plug? Or I just pump the new fluid from one opening til fresh oil overflow from the other? And at the end, how much oil should I put in there?

2. Flush the system? How to do it? Or it is just another term for changing compressor oil?

Since my system contains no gas anymore and it is a good time to overhaul the system, apart from changing o-rings and filter dryer, any other work I should perform for long term benefit?

Thank you!

are you in America? they seem to be the only ones silly enough to actually do the airconditioning regassing themselves.

i'd suggest if you don't work as an A/C tech that knows how to do it, leave it to the pros. the A/C gas can give you frostbite i think if you mess up.

How to change AC compressor oil?

Ha ha, then I could be the first silly Sydneysider. :D

Thank you for the tip. The current system is completely out of gas and I'll ask auto electrician to evacuate and recharge the system after the conversion. Hope that could minimise the hazard.

I did search the net and keep getting info regarding compressor oil change. However found no detail about the actual operation.

Hope you guys/gals could help.

i spose this might help

SAFETY FIRST
Certain parts of the air conditioning system are highly
pressurized. The refrigerant used in the system (R-12,
also called Freon) can cause severe frostbite if it comes
in contact with your skin or blindness if it gets in your
eyes. In addition, if Freon contacts a hot exhaust manifold
it will turn into phosgene gas, which is fatal if inhaled.
For these reasons, extreme caution should be used when
working on the A/C, especially when recharging it.
Be sure to wear the proper safety equipment,
including safety goggles and insulated gloves.
