Yep, I did that once, I have to take off my wind blocker and the rims was 17" and I had my roof up as well. Cant see anything out of the car except straight and right.

BTW on CR forum someone had some-kind of bike rack style towbar which stack all the 4 wheels together.
I'll see if I can find the pics.

7. Run the seat belt through the spokes of the first 2 wheels and buckle them in.
8. Remove space saver from the boot and put the 4th wheel where it was (it also just fits)


Very detailed write up magna_blue. I did this about 2 week ago and can definitly confirm four tyres will fit in an NA! It took me awhile but figured it out. It was like a jig-saw puzzle :lol:

I think I've seen Ian Vickers put one of his tyres on the rollbar instead of the boot so he had more room. Just remember that while you can JUST get them to fit...you still want to bring some tools and consumables with you to the track. I'd never go up there without atleast some engine oil and spanners. The standard wheel braces won't live forever if your changing 4 tyres with them every trackday either. Me and Andrew just share a trailor and tow it up with my car at the moment.

I knew I should have taken a pic of manga_blue's setup at Philip Island :roll:

I think that luggage rack would be too light weight to carry a couple of wheels and tyres. :?

I have tried all four in the car/boot, the bootrack (only one tyre, though they are rated at 20 or 25kg) and finally the mini-trailer. All got too complicated, time-consuming and just a PITA.

Now I trailer the car - drive it on, drive it off ready to race. End of the day, drive it on, tie it down, and head home. Bags of room for gear, eskys, tools etc too!

That rack is a cool set up.

How many people trailer their registered MX5 to the track?

My 5 is stock but I'm considering trailering it to Wakefield. Though everyone seems to say, just drive it down (from Sydney). I've got the OEM 14' NA8 wheels on standard Yokohama road tyres. How good a condition will they be after a days track day?

I'm just worried that they'll be damaged and I won't be able to drive the car back to Sydney.

Me. Well, not any more, I am building a dedicated racecar, but I did for the last year or so.

Mike H. Not to the Sydney tracks perhaps, but elsewhere, for sure if SWMBO comes along...

Tyre wear, mechanical problems, accidents, the possibility of these is another reason to trailer it. I have only needed a trailer once in four or five years of track days, supersprints etc., but man was I glad that I had it then - it saved so much grief that day.

The mx5 is not a heavy car so it's not that brutal on tyres. Unless the tyres are really poor quality I doubt you'll see any damage at all. When I first started I did about 4 trackdays on Sumitomo HTR-Z II's. All that happened at the track was a little beading around the tread. Remember the standard class for the club require street tyres too which all those people are running. Can't say I've seen anyone with a stock car trailoring.

I ran my NB8C in the standard class and the NC in the standard and modified class using stock tyres.

Going on my experience I get 40,000 kilometres out of a set of tyres with my normal driving style. If do say 5 or 6 track days on top of my normal driving I getting about 30,000 kilometres. So you will have no problems driving back from the track, which is what 99% of members do.

As for fitting my track tyres into the NC, not a hope in hell. I can’t fit the standard tyre/rim in the boot and close it. I take a spare standard tyre to track days and sit it vertically on the passenger seat wrapped in a towel and held in place with the seat belt. There is no way I could take two 225 R-Spec tyres sitting on the seat, side by side and change gears, let alone sliding one down behind the seat.

street tyres usually hold up pretty well, but dont overheat them!!!

tyres usually only go bad and warp/chunk/melt when they are overheated.

This is on NB 16s on my car.
The 14s with c drives were struggling a little bit on 6 psi...

I carried 4 wheels on the rear parcel shelf mounted vertically and ratchet strapped to the roll bar, I got lots of funny looks.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

I think these are the ones I've got except in 15's. If that's the case, expect them to last longer. I tracked mine a couple of times, and there's still tread on them even after all the daily driving.
