Does that still produce the same induction noise as the conventional CAI?

The "conventional C.A.I." has a different meaning to different people so in this case I am assuming you are referring to what you have? If this is the case, then I have never heard the kit you have nor the Autoexe NB cold side C.A.I. kit in order to base a comparison.

The induction noise was always a by-product of fitting an 'performance' air filter kit to any of my old customers' MX5s. They were always more interested in the gains on the dyno when combined with a good set of extractors and exhaust system. I do remember them commenting that it would make a 'nicer' & 'louder' sound though. :mrgreen:

I think that everyone's goals for air filter kits are different (performance, filtration, looks, sound, build quality, etc) and thus that is why there will always be differing opinions on such topics. 8)

I was always under the impression that the noise was from the filter itself. Throwing a pod on the end of you stock intake pipe does not a cold air intake make, but you will get the noise.
Routing an external source of cold air in to your stock airbox would count as a CAI, but probably wouldn't get you the noise.

Its actually the other way round, K+N pod insted of standard filter box, no noise. Mania cai ,lots of induction noise under hard exceleration

I'm going to have to disagree there sorry grump. I've had cars previously with no modifications under the bonnet other than a giant pod sitting on the end of the stock intake tract, and they made a world of noise under hard acceleration.

My pod filters have always made a loud sucking noise as well. The mania style are louder though because it is right at the windscreen cowl

I've seen cheapo flexible tubing at Supercrap and i've seen some VERY expensive tubing as used for brake ducting on race cars etc. If Dick is using some of the higher quality hose then that's going to push the price up.

Perhaps the reason they stuck to the flexible hosing means the system may work with various strut braces and be easier to modify in turbo applications.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

you're 100% right, i was just talking about the aesthetics of the tubing.

you're right about it being a more universal fitment than the hard pipe versions , such as the mania one. and yes, it was dead simple to make it fit with my turbo for this very reason.

Whilst out and about the other day, we were also wondering the difference in the filter sound. Friend has chucked a pod filter on instead of a K+N Panel and the noise difference is noticeable. I'd have to agree with the sentiments expressed here that the pod filter plays the large part in the increased noise.

However, when I increased the amount of air going through my stock air box the noise increased too. I would say that the sound is about 50% filter 50% additional air being sucked into the system.

well, as I was saying ,when I had the k+n pod filter on the noise was only just noticible, with the mania CAI it is very noticible. graemebc now has my K+N on and its the same with his car, only just noticible.

well that's interesting. when i drove boag's nb8b with a pod filter the induction noise was very noticeable (sounded bloody fantastic actually) compared to a standard airbox. sure you don't get that loud sucking noise that you get with a cowl intake, but the induction note was most definately louder and sexier.
