well i'll put my hand up in support of crzy here. the filter itself is a pretty cool thing, well made and does have this vortex thing going on which "apparently" gives better induction. i'd post a photo but i can't be assed disassembling everything to get a shot of it.
this was the first mod i did on my car, pretty sure i did it before i found this forum. i reckon it did give a nice improvement to the car, freed it up a bit. i was a happy customer at that point but then later down the track when i found this forum, joined the club etc and got a bit more knowledge under my belt i did end up with a bit of a sour taste in my mouth about the mx5 factory , similar to what meanmx has mentioned.
but dick has chosen to use an expensive filter / housing and has to pass those costs on. fair enough i suppose. altho, the crappy flexible tubing lets the presentation of the whole unit down a lot, i think.
i guess i learnt a very valuable lesson by buying this intake, and those who have followed my progress on this forum, or in person, know that these days i DIY as much as possible, and do a lot of research before spending money on anything. so i guess i learnt that lesson thanks to this intake (which i still use, and i'm still happy with it).
summing up: if i had my time again, i would not have bought this, i would have DIY'd it.

i'm curious on what filter is being used that racks the cost up so much?
its quite interesting as autosalon tested 12 filters and one of the cheapest came first for flow and second for filtration, whereas the dearest were on the backend of the results.

The Simota, or Simota lookalike, partially encased pod filiter which MX5 Mania uses in its CAI is similar looking - admittedly not green cotton & nor does it have the black plastic cap.

I hope people arent knocking my commitment to research as i have researched it alot. This includes driving in 3 cars with this mod, researching the theory religiously, reading through mattys writeup about a thousand times, speaking to many people, scouring the forum for info, opting to diy it at one stage, calling up mania and mx5factory numerous times to discuss the item and then finally mx5 mania telling me it was a couple of months wait for their stock to come in, thats what did it for me, it works, im more than happy, wouldnt diy it as i prefer to have a branded system, regardless of how it looks, or runs, then do it myself because i feel as though people will take it more seriously.
Most of the Mx5 specific kits on the market, which is three Loch Stewart, mania, and this. And like i said the thing that made me settle was manias ridiculous "couple of months wait" on the new stock.

Autoexe used K&N filters. That is what is specified in all my old Autoexe catalogs. I think that in some of their website images, you can just make out the K&N logo on the air filter. Here is an example of their Mazda 3/Axela kit and it is the clearest image I could find of the air filters that they use.
Autoexe Mazda 3/Axela air filter kit:
Btw here is their other CAI kit for the NA6/8 ... look familiar?
The complete Autoexe CAI kit:
The CAI installed:
I hope the OP doesn't mind me posting this here, no hijacking intended.
