The MX-5s I once owned!

Postby Amanda » Thu Jan 01, 2009 10:08 am

Hi everyone,

I found a bunch of old photos of my previous MX-5s on the PC. So thought I'd pop them into a new thread in the Garage to introduce myself to those that dont know me and provide a refresher for the mx5cartalkers that have been around awhile and do know me!

So to kick off here's my old 1989 NA6 'MX5555' I bought her from Brighton Mazda in '01 and kept her for 3 yrs. The only mods that were done were a Unifilter Pod (thanks to Juffa) NB8A rims, chrome interior bits, voodoo knob and brake grip, benny's boots and I picked up a hardtop!

Unfortunately I dont have many pics on the PC of this one. Was a little pre-digicam era I think.

I ended up needing something a little larger, so off MX5555 went....

Then in 2005 I got bitten by the 5'er bug again and voila, an impulse purchase later we have a '01 NB8B in Grace Green

I did a few cosmetic changes to this car:
OEM style hoop bar thingo (loved this mod)

satin finished dash surrounds. These were fun to fit! :) and made a real instant impact. Also added a textured Voodoo.. no MX-5 is complete without the Voodoo gear knob. I'm thinking of buying one now, so I have it ready to go when I get my next 5'er.

I don't recommend diff tyres back and front, it was VERY scary in the wet like this
Image

this is what you get when a pedestrian runs into your car, the dent has been pullled out here as it was scraping on the tyres... the first I saw of the dent was the reflection in a building window in the CBD, nearly crashed the car again when I saw what this guy did to my car     he was ok, just apologised and RAN off like a bat out of hell. He probably saw what he did to my car.

Thats all folks, thanks for looking! One day I'll update this with my third 5'er

i'm glad the pedestrian ran into your car instead of you running into the pedestrian!

i would have chased him down and get his details, force him to cough up the money for the damage. looks like a good couple of hundred dollars worth to fix.

It all happened so quickly (as accidents usually do) at the time I was more worried about him. He literally ran right into the side of the car, face planting and bracing himself on the bonnet. I had the roof down and as he ran around me I just yelled out that I hope he was ok. He said he was and just ran off. Wasnt till about 5-10mins later that I went 'hang on, what damage did he do to my car' then I freaked out!

I got quoted about $1k to fix it. In the end i traded the car with the dent still there.

Hi Amanda

I see you're itching to get back into the 5 scene. 8)

I remember swapping my OEM Fashion bar with you and in return getting your RB2 Style bar.

Like you, I love my RB2 style bar.

Yeh we did, I remember that! Very pleased  to hear you are getting good/happy use from the style bar we traded. I ended up selling the fashion bars to a guy that had a brg ltd NA.

Unfortunately they're too big an item to 'store' away somewhere for later!

On the green 8b, were you driving with 205/45/16's? or 205/50/16's? Im asking because im not sure if i should go from 50 to 45 in profile.. HRmm

But at the same time your spedo will be innacuate, the gearing will be wrong and the car less responsive. And don't mention the added weight to Wun. I've recently gone from a 45 profile to a 60 profile, the difference in ride quality isn't as huge as you would think.

Back on topic, lovely cars Amanda! I can't wait to see your next one.

More profile = better comfort absorbs pot holes better etc
You will pay for it with an increase in MOI and a loss in feel and handeling.

A simple definition of MOI for any object, be it a point mass or a 3D-structure, is given by:
I = r^2 dm
r is the (perpendicular) distance of the point mass to the axis of rotation.
'dm' is the mass of an infinitesimally small part of the body

So even if the the 45 profile and the 50 profile rubber weighed the same (I think the 50 profile will weigh more in reality). With a larger profile on the same stock rim the value of r will increase, please note this value is squared!

It will be compunded by the fact that the rubber weighs more than the rim and the weight of the rubber makes up 100% of the peripheral rotational mass.

HRmmm I wonder what I would chose??
